Have only been using a bun for a relatively short time (a few months), and have never attempted a stick bun. Was getting dressed and had my hair loose, and wanted to get it out of the way while getting my pants and belt on (now there's a phrase you NEVER hear from short haired guys, LOL).
I had a small stick handy, and figured I'd try out a stick bun. I've seen women wrap their hair up using one a zillion times. So I simply wound my hair around a few times into a basic bun, stuck the stick through and whattaya know?? The whole thing stayed together!
It may not be terribly pretty, but it works.

Hi Frodo,
I discovered the virtues of using hair sticks a couple years ago and now prefer that over a standard fare ponytail.Normally I would either tail my hair or stuff it under a baseball cap,for work usually, but now the sticks rule!I just do a lazy bun and use two sticks to hold it and if done correctly will hold all day without loosening.Below is my example.Cheers

Henna and sticks :)
My singing teacher, Nathalie, has some of the loveliest hair I have seen on a woman (early 40's), curly at the ends and straight further up, thick and luxurious.
As you say, many women are too fussy about how they look after their hair. I have often seen Nathalie do a stick bun in just a few seconds flat. She winds up the whole tail and twists it into position and shoves a pencil in from top to bottom. It seems to hold for quite a long time before she lets it down again or redoes the bun.
She will probably give me some tips as my hair gets longer and I get beyond the ponytail or wearing it loose. Of course, at present, I'm not really ready for either. For showering when I'm not washing my hair, I do a ponytail with what I can get into it, twist the hairband and thread the tail half-way through to make a samurai bun fairly high up. I also do a tail for sailing and cycling, and never mind about the few side and front bang hairs still flailing around.
I will certainly be interested in doing a bun as an alternative to the tail for certain circumstances. Thanks for the tips.
