So I think it's been about 12 months, I cant remember the exact date I started but it was definitely in october, it's getting some nice length to it and developing nicely
Anyway, I decided I would try putting it in a pony tail, first off was buying the hairties, I hadn't the slightest clue on where i would find them, nearly an hour later I managed to find a pack of 18 for ~ $7 USD.
back home it took me nearly 30 minutes and countless attempts, different methods, a handful of hair that had been pulled out, 3 broken hairties and many sore fingers later I had nearly got something that resembled a pony tail... and it was a very loose one at that. My hair was long enough to get most of it tied up.
Either way I'm fairly pleased and it feels pleasant with the hair tied back
I then decided to give it another try and pulled it off, but it took another half hour to get back to where i was before :/
All in all it was a day of trials and tribulation but now that i've made a pony tail I guess im a real longhair now :p
Is there a way to get the hairtie on so that the hair stays pulled back nice and tight?
It just takes practice - the longer your hair grows the essier it will get, too. But, I must say, your hair looks great. I really like it.

Hey Stickeelion,
Congrats on reaching this milestone!
The ponytail definitely becomes you. It gets easier with practice and as your hair gets longer.
Keep it growing, dude!
Your longhaired bro,

30 minutes? It reminds me of myself, I've tried doing the same thing you did and I've spend the same time as you, but I gave up on the second try since my arms were hurting as hell and when I think I finally done, it was all messed up, so I gave up hahaha.
It's something very hard for us "newbies" in the longhairdom I must say, but I think with practice we can do it with eyes closed.
Cheers!
I don't find it hard to get a hair tie on. Put the hair tie on the thumb and first two fingers of your right hand (left hand if you're left handed) and hold it there by opening these three digits. It is best to have already combed your hair. Holding the hair tie on your right hand, use both hands to gather up your hair at the height where you want your tail. With the tips of your right thumb and two fingers holding the hair tie, pull the hair through the hair tie. Use your left hand to twist the hair tie and pull the hair through the other way. Depending on the size of the hair tie and the thickness of your tail, you might need a second twist the third pull-through.
You can probably find video demonstrations on Youtube. Women do it the same way, at least at this basic level, and there are many more women's hair styling sites than men's. So you can find the method that is best for your hair.
To adjust your tightness, divide the tail into two and take each half in each hand. Pull them apart gently, and that will tighten your hair. Don't overdo it. As I have read elsewhere, even if you have very long hair, a ponytail has to be redone every so often. Brush or comb your hair each time.
Good luck!

My preferred method is modification of what you do. I slide the tie over the wrist of my right hand and use the thumb and forefinger of both hands to grab the hair. Then when I have it cinched down I hold it with my right hand and use my left hand to slide the tie down over the hair while continuing to hold with my right. I then pull the hair through the tie and twist it once before I release my right hand. At that point I can use both hand to manipulate the tie until it's tight. It's easier than it sounds and I can do it without looking in less than 30 seconds.

I've just tried your method, and it is actually easier, giving my right hand more movement to gather up the hair. Thanks. I'll do it like this from now.

There is a short and long answer to this question.
The short answer is no but,--
the long answer is yes.
What I mean by that is that you will never be able to keep all of your hair to stay neat in a hair-tie no matter how long your hair gets, however, as your hair continues to grow longer and longer you will find that putting your hair in a hair-tie becomes easier and easier the more you tie up your hair. Same is true if/when you decide to try your hand at braiding, buns, etc. and whatever else your hair imagination comes up with to try.
Thanks for the update. Looking good and keep it growing and flowing.

I still sometimes check in the mirror to make sure it's centered..
Looking great.. Keep growin... and...flowin....
