A family just moved in across the street about a week ago and the 15 year old son has hair almost to his waist! He said he started growing it about 5 years ago when he decided he wanted to have long hair and just gets it trimmed occasionally now. Have to say I was quite impressed both from a length standpoint but also from his commitment. It takes guts to grow it out at any time, but I imagine it takes a bit more to do it at his age, so I figure we can all stick with it and do it!
Jason F. Wright, wrote an interesting column this week about how each of us is, in his own way, an Odd Duck. (http://jasonfwright.com/column/face-it-youre-one-odd-duck.html) It's heartening when we meet a teen who is willing to stand out, to be a non-conformist, to embrace his own Inner Odd Duck. In a sense, each one of us longhairs has done so, but most of us did only at an older age, when it was safer. Many of us would not, did not have the guts to do so at 15. This young man should understand how wonderful is the self-confidence that allows him to dare to be different at his age.
