I have a pretty thick beard except for this one spot on my right cheek, where it apparently doesn't grow at all. I'm 21 now, and have been shaving since I was 13. I always thought it was something that would come out later. I've noticed this on a couple of other people also. What's up with that?
The Fidel Castro look is what you have. Alot of beards grow that way, sort of "moth-eaten" You might consider an alternative like a goatee, or a beard that's cut low on the cheeks.

Mine is that way, too, but you wouldn't notice it because I've let it grow long enough to cover the spot.
