Hi everyone,
My hair is about 2 inches now, and looks like a brown fro, which will probably get pretty big before it starts to fall.
I just stumbled across this board doing research on how to grow out my hair, while keeping it "presentable". I work for a very large shipping company that has a very "traditional" corporate culture. Some have compared it to the military in dress code and management style. Because of all that I will need to keep things "tidy" while I am growing out to ponytail/bun length. I'lll probably do that with some gunk of some sort and pulling the back into a tail.
I have had long hair 3 times before, but two times were with dreadlocks in high school and early college, so obviously I was not too concerned with presentability for a job... or at all. The other time was right after cutting the second set of locks but I kept it combed-out. I cut it that time because I thought I needed to in order to get my current job. This is not true I just need to keep the hair off my ears and collar. I could have done that since it was just at ponytail length before the cut. I still hate that I didn't do more thorough research before I chose the clippers.
So, after that personal-hair-history-lesson, I have decided to grow it out for a fourth time. I just don't feel right clipped short. Every time I see pics of the longhair days, dreaded and combed, I am annoyed I don't have that now. I'll use gunk when I need to, to get by with the dress code. Once it is ponytail/bun length I won't need to worry. I have seen several supervisors just bun it up with no problems.
Anyway, glad to be here. Nice to see some fellow longhairs.
Welcome to the board, Sym!
Glad you were able to grow your hair out in different opportunities in the past!
After achieving ponytail length, what´s next?
Don't forget to check in here and update us!
Hey Sym,
Welcome to the tribe, bro.
You've come to the right place for encouragement and advise in growing out your hair.
If you feel comfortable post a pic.
Welcome, dude!
Your longhaired bro,
Raymond
Here is one from back in April when I was still clipping it short.
I want to get a recent picture then I will post it up. couldn't find any on the computer. I'll also try to get some old pics so you all can see how long it use to be and the texture. My hair is really curly and I have a ton of it.
Here is one from yesterday after a shower and good conditioner soaking. I think its about 2 1/2 to 3 inches now. It gives you an idea of how think and curly my hair is.
Through your description, there is no doubt who you work for.
Do you work in a distribution center, or are you a driver? I know at least the drivers are not allowed facial hair. My cousin is a truck driver. He has always had a beard. His trucking company was purchased by your "large shipping company". Since he already had a beard, he is allowed to keep it as long as he never shaves it.
Good luck with the grow out. Hopefully you won't get much hassle from supervisors. Have you seen fellow employees grow it out while on the job?
I am a supervisor in the Hub. I have not seen anyone grow it out in my building, but there are at least 2 other supervisors that have it pulled into a bun, and I see several drivers throwing their longhair under a cap. There is only one driver I know that has a beard, but that has to be a religious exemption because he is a Sikh.
I think I will be alright as long as I keep it off the ears and collar while it grows. I just would rather not have to deal with the gunk, but that is the way it is until I work somewhere else.
Hi Sym,
Thanks so much for the nice introduction -- and Welcome to MLHH!!!
Whatever it takes: be it gel, hats, bandanas, or half-tails (when your bangs, AKA "fringe" if you live in the UK or Down Under, get long enough)... just tough it out as best you can during the awkward stages, and then a couple of years from now, you'll feel back to normal again!
