I went for a maintenance trim and asked the stylist how many more inches before I reach mid-back. she said three to four more inches. I asked her, since hair grows 1/2 - 1 inch/month, I should be at mi-back in 3-4 more months. she replied that she didn't know about the 1/2 - 1 inch/month ratio.
that left me wondering, is that standard or does it vary by person, hair type, etc.
Hi Mike,
Well the norm is around a half inch per month but of course people will vary on that and also if your hair is curly it will take longer to see the actual length show.
In my case I haven't had a professional trim since 2005 so you'd think my hair would be past waist length but it isn't.I know its still growing because I re henna my hair roughly every six to eight weeks and can clearly see the new growth that isn't colored at my scalp.Kinda wonder why it isn't longer then but I attribute that to breakage and shedding.Hope this helps.Cheers

Hi mikeh,
I agree with what Mark (AKA "Hairball") said. I believe my own growth rate might be slightly slower than the average person; but that could be because I've pretty much achieved terminal length now, only occasionally eeking out an additional inch or less (it hasn't appeared to grow much beyond my belt-line for several years now, only recently touching the top of my butt).
I hope that answers your question!

I've read a lot of books and articles on hair and hairstyling and they all concur with the half inch per month average. I've monitored my own growth and it's almost exactly that. Your stylist obviously didn't pay very close attention in beauty school.
