I probably wouldn't have bothered to learn to do this at the length I have if not for my winter sports stuff.
I think it's a pretty solid bundle of hair, now that my bangs reach the tie!
Hi Vin,
You have a wonderful head of hair to grow looooong -- it looks very full & thick, and in excellent condition!
Re. man buns, however: I have no idea what exactly "defines" it (or how long it would need to be in order for the majority of folks to consider it to be such); but judging from your pic here, it looks to me more like a ponytail that has been doubled over.
Here's a pic of me from the back/side of my head, taken by a co-worker a year or more ago. The dark-colored hair-tie, twisted 3 times over, is what's holding my "man-bun" together... in my case, it's actually a long ponytail twisted and coiled into a weird concoction at the back of my head (you can see a small amount of the tail sticking out of the hair-tie, off to the right of the bun); so I don't know if the Hair Police would even call mine a "proper" bun, either (LOL)!
In any case, maybe some of the guys that also belong to the women's long hair community ("LHC?") might be able to shed some more light on what defines a bun VS a "pull-tab" ponytail, etc....

I have no idea what a "man bun" is either.
I know what a bun is . But I don't know what a man bun is exactly or what they mean by adding the "man" before the "bun".
If the person who is wearing the "bun" is a "man" then why using the term " man bun "?
That really sounds funny to me because girls dont say " I am putting my hair in a woman ponytail " (lol).
Btw , you guys have both amazing hair.
Thanks, Dave!
I love your comments and observations, and couldn't agree more about the "girl-bun" VS "man-bun" terminology!
Here in the US, even the fashion industry has decided to occasionally use the term, "man bun" -- it may be only in the far outer fringes of the fashion industry; but I have heard & seen it used, go figure. I guess it's just to help identify (as if the public has so much "trouble" distinguishing between a male & a female - LOL), that the long hair in a bun in a particular photo belongs to a man, rather than to a woman...
And on that note... time for me to undo yesterday's crappy-looking man bun, and brush it out and do SOMETHING ELSE with my hair today (LOL)!!

You lazy bun!
I think 'Man bun' is used mostly to carve out a "manly" space inside what has been a stereotypically feminized style. The usage I've seen will call anything from a pony stub or barely folded ponytail to a messy bee butt bun a "Man bun", but would then reserve the right to mock a male for wearing a neat nautilus or other neat/elegant up style.
Bah.
A bun is a bun regardless of the sex of the person. I think to be a bun, the hair should be twisted or turned more than 360 degrees (a full circle), beyond that I can't think of a single universal characteristic of all buns (either style or securement)...and I can think of an exception to this that is universally called a bun!
LOL!
How about a "morning bun" from Tartine Bakery (on 18th & Guerrero - for those of us lucky to live in SF)? Those are the best buns in the city!
After all these years, I finally found the convenience of wearing a bun. My hair was in a bun every single day last summer. A bun is very convenient to swim in and not worry about my hair. It also gets my hair off my back....a pony hanging down can cause my back to sweat.
My go to bun is a nautilus bun. I've perfected it so I don't even have to look while doing it.
Hair is hair. Long hair is long hair, whether on a female or male. Some people find a man wearing a bun a little strange, since it is not the norm. One just has to have confidence to wear their hair however they want.
VinYang's hair in the picture is not in a bun. It is just barely long enough to gather the top portion and tie it. I guess you would call it a very short ponytail. It is not a bun. It is not even a folded ponytail (which I don't consider to be bun). But it does look cool and convenient.

... a great look - very 'Samurai' ...
