Knowing that I have pin-straight hair texture, it's pretty strange to me that now the hair on the bottom of the back of my head is curling and flaring out (It did this last time I grew it out. Still looking for an explanation).
Because the hair on the sides ends at the same point that the bottom starts flaring out (right below the ear-ish), my hair shape from the front is basically a spade from a deck of cards atm
Any ideas on how to tame the back to be straighter? Should I try out a straightener (heat protectant, of course), or hide it in a loose ponytail (something I can actually do now, conveniently), or something else?
Hi Vin Yang,
Nothing for nothing but I think your hair looks great the way it is so why mess with success my friend :)Unless you are trying to achieve a certain look I'd just be happy with what I have.Cheers

Just letting it grow a bit longer should help. The curling would be moved down to the new lower location of your ends, which would be "out of sight, out of mind". The weight of that hair would pull down on where your hair is curling now, and make hair in that location more straight.

Hi Vin,
First of all, when you grew your hair before what happened to the curling at the ends? Did it go away or flatten out and get straight? I wouldn't really call that curling. Curling is where the hair makes ringlets and yours is just flaring out.
The hair in the back is probably flipping up because of the curve in your neck where the shoulders are. I think once your hair grows sufficiently past your neck and shoulders it will be straight all the way down from the weight. I would just let it keep growing and see what happens. My guess is that your hair will not form ringlets and curls at the ends. It is looking great right now however! I look forward to your future updates. Please stay well my friend!

Welcome to the awkward stage. That's exactly the reason for the name.
Let it grow and it will look normal in a couple of months.
The photo is of the Taiwanese band, Mayday. Bass player Masa (on the left wearing the tie) has hair like yours. His is just a few months longer than yours. Yours will look like that soon enough. Don't worry about it.
trying again for the photo
If I miss, it's here: https://koolcampus.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/mayday-11.jpg
Just let it grow. It won't flare out like that when its ten or twenty inches longer.

Your hair looks great. The reason it bends is due to your shoulders being in the way. It happens to all people growing their hair out. Once it is mid back length, it will straighten out a bit.

Thanks for the encouraging words and advice, people :)
All this is part of the process. You are lucky to have great hair! If you really are a longhair at heart, all this is to be Enjoyed as part of letting your true self be seen. There is NOTHING to do,but just wait, stop obsessing and let it grow. Your hair will look better, the more you just cleanse it gently, condition it appropriately and just Let It Grow. There will be stages, and Days and Weeks when you don't think your hair looks it's best, Again, all part of the process. You have to just stop looking and assessing too much and enjoy the journey. No more obsessing and you will be a happy longhair in a year. Best of luck, SJ
Hey VinYang,
You are entering the 'awkward stage". It is part of the Rite of Passage in growing out your hair. Enjoy it. Play with it. Go with it. Don't use any straighteners. In a few months your hair will have the weight and volume to frame your face and cascade nicely over your shoulders. Don't trim nor cut your hair. It'll be only a few months more.
Your longhaired bro,
Raymond
Normal stuff. Just let it grow out and it will go away.
However, if it really bothers you can always use a flat iron. Just keep in mind the following:
- Not to flat iron more than 3 times a week.
- Use heat protectant
- Use a flat iron with temperature selector so that you can choose the right temperature for you. Many old flat irons come with a default temperature for all hair textures and that can damage your hair because every hair type will need a different temperatre. Make sure you get one that you can choose the temperature (so if your hair needs a lower temperature you can set it)
I would be afraid to flat iron. I find that heat is not good for hair in any form. Blow drying, curling irons, flat ironing are all bad for your hair.

Let it grow and when it gets longer, the weight will keep it from flaring out. Your almost there. Then all you have to do is decide how long.

I would agree about not using heat to straighten your ends. I have never done anything to style my hair. I have just left it natural. Go with it and let it curl as it gets to your shoulders, and I am sure it will straighten as it grows down your back.
Enjoy your hair, and the journey.
