I was stuck inside today so decided I'd do a hair update as I haven't posted any purely hair photos in a while. It's been a few months since I've had a proper trim and haven't paid that much attention to my hair. It's nowhere near as long as it was when I was going for terminal around this time a year ago but it's regained quite a bit of length.
I still play around with the idea of going for greater length but doubt it's really in the cards. No worries as I enjoy the length I have.
Here it is all down in two different lights. No flash was used in either photo but the first was under mainly artificial light whereas the second is entirely natural light.
I tried two variations of the halftail braid. In the first only a small amount of hair was put into the braid leaving the bulk down. In the second I put a much larger section of my hair into the braid. I like both but the second is better for more vigorous activities.
Hi Jason,
You inspired me to post an update. I have an old Kodak 2.0 mega pixel camera. The picture turned out better than I thought it would. I am considering trimming my hair closer to your length. However, I recently posted about hair length, sports, biking etc. You mentioned your link for braiding, and others showed me ways to control my hair while working out. I cannot make up my mind to trim it shorter, or let it go. I have decided that, if I can sit on it, it is too long for me. I kind of think that belt length will be long for me. I will have to wait a while and then decide. Keep posting and growing.
Darrin
Wow, Darrin, I'm blown away by how incredible your hair is! It just doesn't seem to taper and it appears that your hair is quite coarse in texture and can probably take a lot of abuse unlike the fine hair that I have.
I'd be tempted to go for terminal if I was you! Braiding, bunning and multiple ties should help you.
I'm glad I inspired you to make an update!
Hey Jason,
Thanks for the kind words. Part of me would like to grow to terminal. I just do not know if I could deal with my hair past belt length. I am going to try to learn braiding and bunning. I do the multiple tie pony tail now.

... that's a great mane - a real head-turner ... cheers :O)
During the 1980s I had knee length hair, I felt at the time it was too long for Mountain Climbing, biking, etc. So I trimmed it back to waist length. Now that i'm 60 years old I regret doing it, I wish I had kept the length and figured out ways to keep the length and still done my biking, mountain climbing, etc. The bottom line is there are ways to do both between braids, buns, etc.
I would suggest to keep the hair as long as it will grow and strive to find a way to keep the length and maintain your other activities.
From where I sit if I can sit on my hair it's not too long. In those years it felt really great to sit on my hair, have it cascading down my back and past the waist touching the knees, and having the hair longer than my cut off shorts.
But that was years ago, now that i'm 60 years old I doubt i'll ever reach that length again. (I'm striving to get back to waist length but not having much luck.) I usually end up having to chop off about 7 inches of hair to get the ends to look decent.
So the moral of the story here: enjoy the length while you have it.
Hi Long Hair in Albany,
You do have a point. Our hair may change as we get older.
Darrin
fantastic update - your hairs LQQKing amazing:- the colour, body, wave, thickness & I'm lovin' the braiding too ... cheers CEM. ~:0)~
Looks superb, Jason!
Good things take their sweet time...

Jason, your hair is (and continues to be) mane-ificent. Hope all is well with you and your family.
Hi Jason, amazing hair. Lance
....so we are all delighted you were snowed in...and spent the time posting an update.
Always a delight to see and glad to see the famous "Jason Braid"
Thanks for Sharing

Jason,
It is always good to see and read your updates. The younger guys and those just starting out on this journey will be encouraged by your post. It is great to see your pictures and see the various ways you wear your hair - great braids and it looks good - Viking-like or Middle Ages-like - as I know you enjoy the guys in the Hobbit movies with their awesome long hair and unique braids...
Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Hi Jason,
As always, it is great to see an update from you. I know that my activities on the hyoerboard have been very low lately, for that I apologize, but once I saw your update, I just had to pop in to comment.
Your hair looks excellent here, and the thickness and condition look good. Your braiding skills, as always, are first class.
I guess that you have been getting the same stormy weather that we have been getting here in Nova Scotia, but even worse than ours. Since I get several of my US channels from Boston, I can see exactly what you are dealing with. Let's hope that spring won't be too long coming this year.
Take care, and thank you for sharing,
David
Your website was something I discovered last January as I started to look for websites about long hair on men. It was a real inspiration, and then I found MLHH.
Your length seems about what I would like before beginning to trim and shape the hair as it is beginning to fall down my back (with the lovely sensation it gives when brushing on the back of the shoulders). After a time, my layers will grow, and it will all end up at the same length.
Like you, I am active outdoors, especially sailing (I'm waiting for the new season when the weather gets better - mid February or March) and cycling. I now have very little in the way of awkward stage hair.
In brief, congratulations for your good head of hair, even fine hair! I look forward to being able to experiment with braids and buns, but that will be in a while. It's already nice to be able to ponytail when I go out to my various activities, both outdoor and musical.

Hi Jason,
Its always a pleasure to see an update from you so if it takes a snow storm then so be it.LOL. I'm sure by now everything is dug out just in time for another blast of winter.Your hair always has great density which is nice to see which also allows for fantastic braids.Hoping all is well with you coping with the weather including your work situation. It's nice to think spring isn't all that far away :) Cheers

Hi Jason,
Thanks a bunch for the awesome update! As usual, your hair is looking fantastic my friend! I love the various colors you have that are visible under different light. In that one pic, it looks like your hair is straighter. Maybe that was before you braided it. All in all, great progress and I am inspired! If my terminal length is that length, I will be more than happy!
Sorry you were stuck inside but at least we got an update out of it! I hope your employment situation is going okay. And congrats on your Pats winning:) I'm still not buying the crap about the damn footballs either. Please stay well my friend!
Ted
Your hair as usual is awesome. You not only have hair to be
jealous of, also your ability to do various cool braided styles
yourself is to be envied.
Hi Jason, it's always wonderful to see your updates. Your hair looks great and well cared for. I am truly jealous!
Bruce
Thanks for the comments and compliments everyone.
Unbelievably, we had another 18 inches of snow yesterday and have now set a record for the most snow ever in recorded history during a 10 day period. There's just nowhere to put it now!
My job will be ending most likely sometime next month. I've been here 19 years almost and have had no harassment about my hair which I grew long after being here about 9 years. Of course, it's scary to contemplate getting a new job that will allow me to keep my hair but I know it's doable. I think attitudes are far better now than they were in the mid 90s when I got this job.
I think it's very unfortunate that companies can with impunity outsource work as mine has done.
I still fool around with the idea of going for terminal. I was discouraged last time with how the ends looked. Oh to have coarse hair! I might do a 2 inch trim or so when my job ends just to make the ends look neater.
Jason,
I wish you well with your new job search. I work in a technical field and my hair length has never been an issue. I am considering a trim myself, just to shorten the length a little. I just got a trim in December, so I am hesitant. Things will work out fine for you.
Darrin
Thanks Darrin. My current job doesn't involve any customer contact other than through email and phone so appearance shouldn't be, and isn't, an issue. I'm hoping for something similar for my next job.
Hi Jason,
I'm sorry you are dealing with an unusually harsh winter which is only barely half over.I've been fortunate that the storms weren't as severe but I just got lucky that's all.I will never sugarcoat my dislike of the winter season as I just can't take the cold and dealing with the aftermath of these snowstorms just plain sux!
As you know my longtime job of nearly 20 years ended around a year and a half ago but for different reasons. It was the first time since 1994 that I had to scratch around for another job but I managed to land something and thankfully my hair was never mentioned.I would have been prepared to turn down any job offer that demanded a haircut. It's one of my pleasures in life to have longhair so I refuse to let having a job take that away from me.I knew for a fact that I'd get one eventually if I held my ground. It's my feeling too that longhair on men is less of an issue than it used to be.So don't worry as I feel you make out fine when all is said and done.Cheers

Hi Mark,
Your experience definitely gives me hope. It's awesome that your long hair wasn't even mentioned. I agree that having long hair is one of life's pleasures and it's not harming anyone else nor infringing on anyone's rights. It should therefore be a non-issue.
I am heartened that on the one job interview I had a few months ago, my hair was not mentioned. Of course, I didn't get the job but I spent 2.5 hours interviewing so there was definite interest and I would think my hair would have been brought up if there was concern about it.
More snow is on the way.......! Sucks because it interferes with cycling though at least the sledding is great!
Jason
I wish you all the best in landing a new position. It is hard to start over after 19 years.
I have fine hair as well and thinning hair on top and I think I am already discovering that my bangs have reached terminal length at a length just below my chin, while the hair on the back of my head is growing much longer still...
And, I am glad to say that I started a new job this week. I managed to be hired at 58 years old with long hair. I do have to keep it pulled back from my face - that is the only restriction. In orientation class, I have been sharing the room with three Physical Therapists that sport shaved heads and lots of muscles - I am a plump social worker twenty years their senior, at least... and feeling kind of cool about myself.
All the best, Jason - I hope this encourages you.
Hey Fitz,
Thanks also for relating your personal experience. It's very encouraging.
I would definitely wear my hair back for interviews and also for my working time. I usually wear it this way anyway for most activities so that's no problem.
Perhaps you could try halftails to allow for your shorter bangs to still be tied back. I'm so happy that you haven't allowed doubts to dissuade you from continuing on in your hair journey. It's been wonderful to see.
Best,
Jason
Hi Jason,
Naturally, I am sorry to hear about the job situation, and that the concerns you mentioned to me about that when we met in person a number of years ago have come to pass. I will keep my fingers crossed that you will indeed find a good job, working with people who appreciate your desire to have long hair.
We have certainly been getting our fair share of snow in Halifax, but still a far cry from Boston. We had 6 inches a week ago, 2 inches of mostly sleet on the weekend, and another 10 inches the night before last. Another one is forecast for later tomorrow, but there is still uncertainty as to whether it will be rain or snow.
Spring cannot come quickly enough for me!
Take care,
David
Thanks for your thoughts, David.
I think I have about a month or so left. Hopefully it will at least be better weather by then!
Great update, Jason!
Don't worry too much over the terminal length issue. When/if it ever happens, I'm sure that the timing will be good for you then, too. I think about the opposite: when will I finally decide to go back to having my hair professionally trimmed again? Sometimes I miss the neater, cleaner-looking, thicker ends that I used to have; but for now, am enjoying the "fairytale ends", so it's best if I don't obsess about it.
I enjoyed seeing your pics too, especially the different lighting and how your hair color can look quite different, depending on all of those variable factors!
Take Care -- and please keep us posted about the job search.
- Ken
Thanks Ken!
Haha, it's kind of a case of the grass being greener. Blunt and fresh ends are nice but then one can start thinking about longer length and the reverse is equally true.
I'm enjoying the present state of my hair and will probably just keep experimenting for fun.
As much as I hate to see the end of my job coming soon, in some ways I'm looking forward to getting it over with and moving on.
Hi Jason.
Your hair looks fantastic. If you can, why don't you let it grow much longer again? I wish you well for your new job search.
A.D.
Jason,
To say your hair looks amazing would be a huge understatement...
It looks so healthy, and the tips are also looking a whole lot thicker than I remember them.. you are clearly doing something VERY right at this length, brother!
Would love it if you were to consider posting a few YouTube videos with tips to aspiring long hairs, as I know there is a huge demand for such content, and your many years of experience and wisdom would be extremely helpful to many!
Think about it :)
Hey Raul,
Thanks man. I've been practicing benign neglect I guess. I rarely brush through the length but just use a brush on the top portion and finger comb/detangle the rest. I did do a coconut oiling a couple weeks ago for the first time in a long time.
I got a fairly good trim probably six months ago and it's encouraging to see that length come right back in growth. It's different than just leaving it where any differences are very slow to show.
I do have a youtube channel but I believe my last new video was posted 5 years ago. So, I'd be all set up if I decided to add a new video. I did cover some aspects of hair care in my videos previously but I agree that it's past time for a new video! LOL You've planted a seed...
I've included a link to my channel.

Jason, it seems you are trimming your hair several times a year...have you considered how much growth you would have if you just left it alone for a couple of years. Sometimes you mention cutting your hair several inches...seems less...would be more...so to speak.
Fine hair tends to break off if left. I'd probably do better if I found the motivation to do S & D but rarely find the time to do this.
