What do they teach students in Beauty School?
The reason I ask is there is an ad for a beauty school running on TV where they (beauty styilsts) feel it is their duty in life
to rescue the world from bad hair styles. Do they include long hair on men on that list?
Do they teach these students that if a client comes in and wants xxxxx done with their hair it is their duty in life to give them
want the stylist thinks is best?
I've had a bad opinion of hair stylists already, this ad only confirms my worst fears.
I think the key is to find a stylists that you can trust. Have you found one that you trust and like?

No I haven't. There was one woman I trusted, that shop shut down more than a decade ago. Haven't found another since. So i've done the trimming of the ends myself.
I hear you! I found my stylist by asking a fellow long hair guy who trimmed his hair? He had nice hair, so I knew the person trimming it knew what they where doing. I went 1.5 years without a trim, because the woman who trimmed my hair, retired from the business. My hair does look better when I trim it at least twice a year.

There are good stylists and bad stylists...and I presume the same runs for the schools.
On the average, most of the work they do is "average" styles...and there are lot of people out there who will happily follow a stylist's guidance. Like anytime where one is not near the average, there will be resistance or pushback ... so we just have to take measures to avoid negative results...just like I would never walk into a salon for a a "trim", microtrims, and S&D can be done yourself (the longer the easier!)
I really don't concern myself about stylists since I've stopped going to salons back in 2005.I don't even trim my own hair as I just leave it alone except to henna, wash, condition, or oil it.Maybe my hair looks like crap to some but I like the way it looks so I celebrate all the money I saved and don't fret over a stylist accidentally giving me a buzz cut ;) Cheers

I am a hairdresser, and I have long hair myself. I understand how you feel about hairdressers that take too much hair off or don't work with you to achieve your goals. I always keep in mind what my clients want and work with them to make sure it's right for them - if I don't think it'll look good, I'll tell them that, but I won't ever do something without making sure the client is alright with it. If I feel three inches needs to come off to get rid of damaged ends, I will tell the client that and make sure they are happy to do it before I cut it off - we can't stick it back on, after all, and extensions are expensive....
