I won! My mom said I could, as long as I keep it nice. Today, I'm going to get the back trimmed, to avoid the mullet look. Thanks for the support, you guys!
It's the same for us married guys, we need to keep the hair clean and tidy. I have never combed my hair so often in my life, and really felt that I need to! I have opted for the no-cut approach, and the longer it gets, the smaller the difference between the layers. We couldn't advise you very much until now, because we don't know your family. Your mother obviously loves you and seeks the best for you, rather than being bigoted or whatever.
Perhaps you could get a little trim and make the trims infrequent until you get some real length. Can you send us a photo of your hair (webcam or cellphone)?
Keep going...

Huzzah!... Good victory for you. Your mom asked the same of you my parents asked of me in the mid 60s when I started growing my hair out. No issues so long as I kept it clean and combed.
Hi Erik,
I'm very happy that you were successful in convincing your mom how you really felt about growing your hair out.Keeping it neat should be easy as why would you want it any other way my friend.Do keep us posted on your progress.Cheers

Nice taking advantage of a trim opportunity. Although you do have to mention that to the hairstylist before they start taking length off the top. You can always play Yugioh/MTG some other day =P
I am glad to hear the good news! It sounds like your mom is very open minded. In time she will not even notice your hair. My mother recently said I look good with long hair. I am now 47 years old. I donot know, if she always felt that way. LOL!

That's awesome!
When you get trims, please be overly specific about what part and how much length. I've been growing my hair out for a year now, and I got "a trim" in the back and asked for a trim to clip split ends.... And he wound up cutting two inches off the top "to even it out." OMG. My hair does fall down better now, with slight layering, but two inches nearly made me cry!
I learned the hard way many years ago that when you give them
very specific directions on what to do they will go ahead and do what they want. If you tell them to trim only one inch off the ends they'll take it upon themselves to take twelve. It's like when they go to school to learn how to cut and style hair they also teach them to be arrogant, ignore the instruction of het client, and boldly do what they want with your hair.
That being said I trim it myself now. The last time I found
a stylist I trusted was in 1997. That shop closed and i've failed to find someone suitable since.
Don't trim it! Wait a year and see if its lopsided or something, and if so, then maybe just get a tiny trim. But I bet you won't even find it necessary at all.
