The other day I was sitting outside the Corner Bakery reading a free newspaper and consuming the things I had bought down the street in Dunkin Donuts! They close early, and I honestly thought they were shut for the day, but I later realised they weren't. Oops! But that's not what this thread is about.
I was leaning back in one of their wrought iron chairs, and I think mainly just my hair was visible. Some shorthaired guy wearing earphones came up behind me. All he said was "Excuse me ...", and then when I turned my head to face him he became incoherent and ran away!
I'm pretty sure I didn't look that frightening. When I looked at my reflection in a window my hair was even mostly in place.
All I can think is that he must have thought I was female, but what I can't work out is what he had intended to say next? Was he going to ask me for my phone number, LOL!
Weird!
HAHAHAHA that would be my guess. Seeing a man when you expect a woman that you were going to approach would probably put most men through a mini existential crisis.
Calling out to someone who looks out of the ordinary and then running away is actually not such an uncommon thing for people to do, though it's mostly middle and high school kids who do this, in my experience. I get this treatment on a regular basis when I've just had my hair freshly bleached, probably because of the "evil albino" stereotype (I do look very much like a person with albinism until my dark roots start to show). The kids call out to me, "Hey, you!" and then run away screaming when I turn around to look. Sometimes, they follow silently behind me for a while before they call out. I'm not sure if the people who do this sort of thing are just being annoying, or if it's a "test of courage" to see what happens if they speak to someone who looks scary. Not that I'm calling you scary, but an ignorant kid who's never seen a man with long hair could perceive you that way.
