I've reached the point where the hair on the back of my head is starting to pass my shoulders (when wet).
A friend pointed out to my the difference in length between the sides/front and the back, and was wondering if I was going to cut it all the same length now or in the future (Or ever, since she was aware that in 4 years it'd all even itself out naturally)
Presumably, I'd want to do it at some point, but I'm unsure of whether to start cutting back early, or later. I'd be trimming the back with a simple cut across the bottom, at a length where my ponytail would remain intact.
Your guys' thoughts on trimming now vs. later? I need to keep the ponytail for some work in the summer, but besides that, I have no major issues with a few trims leading up to july. Just wondering if there are any advantages/disadvantages either way (outside of extending the awkward phase just a little bit)
I think your hair looks pretty badass right now. If you trimmed the back it be a "bob" haircut (which is not necessarily a bad thing). What is your goal length?

Thanks! I wouldn't be trimming it *quite* that far up right away, maybe a half inch a month over the 6-8 months it'll take for my sides to catch up.
My goal length at the moment is upper-mid back. Long term, I'm shooting for terminal length, but once I know such length I'd probably keep it above the waist if it happens to be *that* long
You have really great hair and it will look better and better as it gets longer. It evens out as time passes. Also, the length you have in the back Now is Encouragement and Progress. Cutting is always delaying what your goal is to a later time. You can always even it out once you get to a long length if it hasn't done it by itself. Enjoy the length and the progress and the Process and just let it grow.
Thank you for your input!
Most likely I'll trim it up once my sides are down to my collarbones, as long as no sudden bursts of split ends result from this summer
Dear Vin,
Did you really expect to get advice other than 'let it grow' around here??! :-)
Seriously, and as others have pointed out, there is no necessity to trims longer layers in order to have one-length hair - if that's your goal. Ultimately they even out due to different growth rates, different strands reaching terminal length at different times, etc. You'll probably speed the process along at some point if/when you trim to get rid of split ends. So there's no reason to cut at any given time just because you ultimately seek one length. And understand that the term 'one length' is relative; because you are constantly shedding old hairs and sprouting new ones, ALL the hair on your head will never all be the same length.
That said, probably everybody on this forum - myself included - has taken an occasional trim or haircut along the way 'just because.' The pampering from a hairdresser WHOM YOU CAN TRUST TO CARRY OUT YOUR EXACT WISHES (ie, who will not cut more than you want), is pleasurable and a reward for the patience required to grow out your hair. After a lifetime (of course, you look a lot younger than some of us) of getting my hair cut according to the dictates and pressures of others, it feels good to march into the salon, tell my hairdresser to snip off, say, an inch, and walk out half an hour later still belonging to the Long Haired Blokes Club but with nice, evened-out, refreshed ends.
Good luck with your decision and all the best!
Don
When it come to cutting or even a light trimming, my advise is always the same: whenever possible, delay delay DELAY!!
Don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong at all with a trim -- sometimes it even seems quite "necessary" (for whatever reason). But, rarely is there ever any genuine "urgency" about a trim.
Your hair is coming along very nicely, Vin! "Onward & Downward!"

In your case, I would wait until the front grows to your shoulders. Then even up the back and have it all one length at your shoulders. From there you can decide how long you wish to grow it out. Good Luck!

Your hair looks awesome and I would not cut it. That is my opinion, which is subjective. Ultimately you will have to decide what to do. Either way, it will look good.
If you don't know, let it grow.
When in doubt, let it sprout.
i'd suggest waiting until you reach your desired length before
trimming anything.
I agree trimming is a lazy man's out to having great looking long hair. Leave it alone I am presently about 2 months shy of 3 years since I stopped shaving my head (which I had done in protest of a bad cut 6 years earlier) I may be the new guy on the block at this forum on Long Hair and I may not have all that much experience as some of the men who post here; however I have gotten over the hump without cow-tailing to my barber who for the first 2 years would have and did try several times to convince me that trimming would.....say what grow faster???? proper care of the growth above your ears takes little effort other than leaving it alone, a good diet, using Coconut or Olive Oil in your diet, properly caring for the growth i.e. cooler water, less shampoo, skipping the use of soap a few times, conditioning, added oils (I use coconut oil but never again Olive oil it is to heavy) to the area that will be a pony tail eventually. It seems that Long Hair will even itself out according to what I see looking back at me from the bathroom mirror and questioning other long hairs you meet on the street.
Silverthorne working on getting there too
I myself am going with the no trim approach :) I had a slight trim 6 months ago or so, but will not be doing so again. My front hairs are getting some length now so it doesn't look like a "mullet" to me anymore. Your hair seems to grow super fast based on your previous posts/pics so I personally wouldn't even touch my hair with a trim :) Keep up the great progress and keep us informed !
I agree w/ Patrick and am also going w/ the no trime approach.
Hi VinYang,
The only decision you should make is to just let your wonderful dark hair grow and grow! I would let the longest part get to my goal length and then trim it straight across. But for now, your hair looks perfectly fine! Please keep it growing!
