I've noticed that with the summer heat, my head starts to produce hair oils (sebum or something?) quicker. A LOT quicker. Because my hair type is very straight and smooth, this oil distributes itself straight down the shaft almost on its own. This is great in the winter (and will be much appreciated in my later years), but with this increased production, my hair feels super oily after only a day and a half, if even that.
Any advice on getting my body to cut back on oil production? Right now I'm thinking of trying to shampoo once every two weeks instead of twice a week, and keeping it loosely tied up during that time. I hope that that'd make it produce less over a period of time, thinking that it doesn't need to replenish its stock as quickly.
I found excellent information within the MLHH suggested sites and chose to follow a water wash only regime last August. My sebum production slowed as promised in a particular article and the routine has given my thin curly hair, body, strength, and manageability. Certainly this is not for everyone as the first several weeks are an extreme change from regular washing with product. Similar to the awkward stage when growing out only shoter time frame. This is the only way I have found through several searches for slowing the production of sebum. Check out the MLHH suggested sites, good luck with you search for a solution! FredO
To Vin Yang; I'm not a scientist so I cannot even begin to suggest anything other than what I have read on care and growing long hair. So far I have made some changes to how I care for mine. Less Sampooing, more conditioning, added Olive Oil internally daily, Coconut oil on the pony tail and probably a lot more just to get a fine tuning. For myself I cannot say that I noticed my body releasing a lot of Natural Oils as you see it differently. I have noticed that in February from a Google search. I started to add internally Olive Oil (Cold Pressed)each morning as my hair is baby fine with lots of body and loose curling. A picture that I had taken in April and what I see 2 months later is a joy to behold my hair is in a growth spurt presently. The natural hair on my scalp below a ponytail seems to have gone bonkers and now sits tightly at the top of my shoulder. The longer hair growing from the top seems to have flowed over and my head picture in the mirror makes me think of a wedge and I am guessing that I need to wait for the under hair to grow long enough to fall off my shoulders.
So I cannot be of any help with to much oil in your case. It could be and this is only a guess that your body wants to protect your hair from seasonal changes making the Oils that you speak of available down to the ends sooner. I have noticed that my hair doesn't tangle at the ends as much and I am loosing less strands when I finger through it in the morning.
Hi VinYang. Here in my corner of Ohio we went from a cool spring directly to a hot muggy summer (so far). During the cool, less humid weather my straight hair felt great and had tons of body with minimal oil. Now in the hot muggy weather my hair completely changed and is oily and limp.
I'm doing the rinse with water only regimen and wash with shampoo maybe once per week. Conditioner makes it worse. Rinsing twice daily sometimes. Seems to work...so far.
BTW, I am starting the process of growing my hair and it's probably only about 3" long on the sides and 5" long on the top. So, my hair isn't very long yet.
