I have just come back from the cinema after watching Jackie Brown. Seeing Samuel L Jackson with long hair was a hoot, albeit it was a wig. But anyway... I keep noticing that often when you have a guy with long hair in the movies or on television he is invariably seen as the bad guy (I know there are some exceptions like Highlander and the guy in Dr Quinn and so on), but as a general rule of thumb the guy is either a bad guy or a total loser. No wonder the myth of long hair on men being no good is perpetuated. Maybe its time the media gave us a positive image. Perhaps the only good thing is that long hair on guys in the movies seems to be more common at the moment. What do others think?
fm OM below:
Take a look at one of the supporting actors in Abbott and Costello's "Jack and the Beanstalk". Also, consider the Robin Hood film with Errol Flynn. By the standards of the 50's, these guys had long hair (albeit a wig, or extensions). But they were the well-coiffed GOOD guys. So being well-coiffed helps, I wood say.

Make that "I would say".

I think it's a reflection of our culture's fear of the natural, especially the natural (or wild) man, who is so often represented by uncut hair.
Plus for at least the last 100 years or more, long hair on men has been a sign of rebellion. In a culture that places a high value on conformity, the long-haired guy is usually seen as adolescent, rebellious, free-thinking, vain, dangerous, unpredictable, disrespectful, primitive, etc. I suspect if a few high-profile CEOs could get over this image and grow their hair long, you might start to see more long-haired leading men.
As a logistical matter, long hair is probably fairly impractical for a male actor who wants to play more than just long-haired roles. The alternative is to wear a wig, which almost always looks fake and silly. Plus, movies more or less mirror reality (or at least Hollywood's version of reality) -- since there are relatively few long-haired men walking around, you're probably not going to see too many more of them in the movies.
Yeah I agree there..I just saw the movie 'Good Will Hunting' and the guy in the bar with the long hair in the pony tale was the one that was treated like a loser. If anyone agrees with me I'd like to hear.
Also..does anyone know if Lorenzo Lamas..One of the coolest guys with long hair still has long hair..or has he cut it now.
Thanx
