a guy with shoulder length or longer hair stands a LOT more HAIR to lose, but here are five reasons why even any guy starting to grow his hair out should avoid any and all barber shops!
1)Barbers think if a guy's hair is over the top of his ears he is overdue for a real haircut.
2)Barbers are good at doing one thing-giving very short short haircuts and love to use the clippers.
3)to a barber, "long" means that you can actually comb the top, short means, buzzed to about 1/4"
4)Barbers still reference The Beatles for helping to put Barber Shops out of business years ago even though the Beatles hair was not that long(from the early years)and it was actually chain salons that put them out of business, not the Beatles.
5)a Barber thinks Men wanting long hair are "stuck in the(insert decade)" and do not comprehend why any Man would want anything other than a standard "business" or military cut in the year 2015.
What about salons for a trim? I haven't been to a hairdresser out of sheer fear but at some point I will need to get a light trim to clean it up. If i tell them I just want 1/4 inch cut off all around will they listen? Going to be pissed if they chop off more than I want.
I wouldn't bother.
No they won't. They will do what they want not what the customer wants.
Then get ready to be pissed. They fully incapable of following directions, They chop off that they want, no matter what the customer wants.
Well, that isn't very encouraging, but I would rather know what I'm getting into than be lied to. Thanks for your honesty! I'll just plan to let it grow as long as possible until it looks really damaged before letting someone touch it with the dreaded scissors.
Apparently, the word 'trim' means something specific to salons that has nothing to do with length and involves cutting off more hair than a lay person would consider to be a trim. That said, barbers are worse.
This is why I long ago learned the basics of self hair cutting. It's actually very easy to trim your own ends when you have long hair. It's totally free and you never have to worry about them taking too much off. The only downside is it takes more time and it can be a bit awkward evening the back using two mirrors. Check YouTube for lots of tutes, though.
They will listen and then do what they have been trained to do, find a spot and use it as a guide all over. Less soap, skipping the soap every 2nd and 3rd time in favor of conditioner left in while you shower. Coconut oil on the ends every time it gets wet and then towel dried and for me a 0.5 oz Cold pressed Olive Oil (taste takes getting used to)internally for stronger roots it does not come out on your scalp. You do not need a trim for maintenance and your hair will not grow faster. A few split ends is nothing to worry about regular consistent use of conditioners will clear that up and you will see fewer tangles by the time you have used the regiment for about 3 months.
All 5 are really spot on and when it comes right down to it they almost never see how the direction of the hair lies and screws the whole thing up. And if that doesn't work how about the single split end that the barber suggested a trim would help the hair grow faster. I go to the barber shop for a beard trim and that is all they get every 3 weeks.
