Hi everyone, my name's Hugo and i'm near 4 months of hair growth after a buzzcut. I have thick, fluffy sorta dry hair that tends to curl up and become very dry at the ends. I told my mom and sister that I want my hair past my shoulders and they said it wouldn't look the way i'd want it to because of my hair type. They also said it wouldn't weigh itself down with said length because my hair is so fluffy. What do you more experienced guys have to say about this? Are they correct?
It's difficult to make predictions at this stage. Your hair looks something like mine did when I was about 20 or so. I say - grow it and deal with the "awkward stage" as best you can. Don't be put off by your mother and sister. Women look after their hair differently from us men. You might find your hair wavy and curly as it grows. I think you will do well with your thick hair. Enjoy the ride!

This is just my personal opinion. You will never really know until you try it. If it ends up looking bad? Cut it off. If you never try to grow it out you will never know what could have been. It's worth a shot. Just my two cents. Good luck.
Unless the two of them have some way of using the length of your hair to try to exert control over you, I would just stop talking to them about plans for how you want to look. It sounds like a typical tactic to discourage a man from being himself. I agree with Anthony that women take care of their hair differently and use it in different ways than men do. It seems like women like to use their hair as an accessory and men typically do not. Hair is a part of your body. There is nothing unnatural about hair.
If you have never had hair longer than your shoulders, your mom and sister are making an argument with logical failings in it. If you have never had hair past your shoulders, they have no basis in reality for making their arguments. It is basically a straw man argument they are making. Don't worry about it.
Hugo; I shaved my head daily for 6 years for no other reason than I did it I spent 1 and a half years of the last 3 and a quarter ignoring my hair. I did nothing special just let it grow. I cannot say that I even had to grow into what I have now I was just happy to not be shaving daily that part of my head. Do what you do for you nobody else important will care so if you have people who don't like it stop talking about it with them. So if I had to give you some advice as a relatively new long hair I would just say use cool water when you shampoo so that you are not drying your scalp, start taking Cold Pressed Olive Oil or Extra Virgin Olive oil a half ounce a day before coffee it takes a week to get used to the taste strengthens the roots and about 3 months in you will see a difference. Use as little shampoo as possible I go 3 weeks now and I use only conditioner when I do wet the head. Ignore the trimming and the shaping the top will catch up to the nape and you will like the layer effect by the time your long hair hits mid back you will be pleased. I started using Coconut Oil at the beginning of my 4th year but would have sooner if I had known about it maybe a year earlier. Send the troops pictures regularly you will get positive feed back even from the guys with hair that hits the belt already we all had short hair at least once in our lives. Silverthorne
How can they say that? I'd say let your hair grow for another 18-24 months and you'll be the judge if you like them (or not)...Chances are you will and you'll possibly want to grow them even longer!

Hi there,
I have thick hair too. When it's short it is mostly straight with a little curl to the ends and it's also quite fluffy lol. I think your hair will grow out fine, just accept that it will be wild for a while.
A couple of recommendations for care: Don't shampoo every day, depending upon how naturally dry or oily your scalp is you may want to try and shampoo every other day to once every few days. When your hair starts getting big, use a bit of gel but also use a leave in conditioner. Last suggestion, only ask supportive people what they think of your hair style/progress. It's hard to go through the awkward phase when you have negative people telling you to cut your hair.
Good luck and happy growing buddy :)
Hi Hugo,
Based on the responses I've read here I'll just rubber stamp the opinion that the best strategy is to grow your hair long and you be the judge, not the naysayers. After all its your hair and your the one that has to approve of how the finished product looks.People can speculate until the cows come home on how your hair will grow out but really what do they know really.Enjoy the journey and please share the results here if you will my friend,.Cheers

Thank you guys for the responses! I will take into consideration what you all have said, and due to my hair being dry, i think it's because i wash it everyday, sometimes twice a day. I will be washing it every other day now and see how it looks. I'll keep you all updated.
Your hair will look awesome long, especially if it's thick. The fluffiness at the ends will go away once it grows out, but your hair texture looks like it will benefit the most from some layering when it's long. Having some blunt edges or slight layers can get rid of the fluffy-ends effect.
Your hair looks like it might be like Dan Price's (although his might be thinner). You should search for him on Google/Bing images. He's the CEO of Gravity, and he's been growing out his hair. You can see it lots of stages. His hair looks awesome long!
