Hello Hairy People,
Not much to report that's "new" re. any recent significant hair growth, since my hair pretty much reached its natural terminal length a few years ago. Other than occasionally using the "Search & Destroy" method of chasing after individual split ends, in June I decided to ask my partner to trim off a couple of inches from the bottom, since the V-shape that I prefer looked more like a "W" (LOL); but it has basically grown back to the same length it was pre-trim already.
This pic was taken by Bill and Larry when they visited my rose garden that I take care of at work. Sorry about the bottom of my hair being cut off by the photo; but I will post another pic that shows the full length in a minute or 2...
"Onward & Downward!" (or, in my case: "onward & onward", since it refuses to grow down any further - LOL)
- Ken
I forgot to mention that the previous photo (the one out in the rose garden) was taken in late April of this year.
This pic, taken indoors, was snapped in January of this same year...
I'm still secretly hoping to reach knee-length someday; but, chances are that since I'm an old geezer now, Mama Nature keeps trying to tell me she's already stopped payment on that reality check (LOL)!

Good to have your latest pics.
Well done on reaching a worthwhile terminal length. I, too would like Mother Nature to give me more length, but if it doesn't happen in this life, maybe it will in the next.
Thanks! And I like your outlook, bte, and I have to admit that I have a similar attitude: I wish I had grown my hair out when I was younger; but since it's impossible to go back in time and change any of my personal history about that, I'll just wait until I can do better (and earlier) hair-farming in my next life!
- Ken
Hope She reconsiders! Onward and onward, indeed!
Ken !
Thanks for sharing that wonderful photo. I reflects your love of life and nature.
Walter
Thanks for the kind words, Walter, I really appreciate it! I hope all is well with you in your neck of the woods -- or, should I say, "desert!"
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
Hey Ken,
At my age I'll be thrilled if my hair grows as long as yours. Time will tell.
Marx (BambooForYou)
Thanks so much for the kind words, Marx! Age and genetics, of course, tend to dictate to all of us, whatever we "can" and "can't" seem to do -- especially re. however much hair growth we might be able to accomplish. In my mind, I've always felt it was an unfair game that Mother Nature played on all of us (she reminds me of one of those people with an overly-mischivous sense of humor, who is constantly pulling a prank on someone, just to see how much cruel teasing they can endure - LOL)....
Mother Nature's modus operandi aside, we won't know how long we can grow our manes until we try our best to, "go for broke!" I never in a million years, for example, thought I would truthfully be able to someday actually reach the length I currently have today... When I was younger, it simply felt like an unattainable pipe-dream. In fact, I pretty much kept it a secret to myself, because often others that were around me at the time of when I was young, they probably would have made fun of the idea.
I now look at it this way: with every added inch, I am definitely happy about it, and am GRATEFUL!!!
Thanks again for your nice reply!!
- Ken
Hey Ken,
Mother Nature certainly rolls the dice and the results are random. We can only hope for the best. I don't know yet if I will go for terminal, but I would like to feel my hair on my back again. It's been about 40 years since I've enjoyed that wonderful sensation and I am looking forward to it with sweet anticipation.
Take care my new friend,
-Marx
Hi Ken,
That's interesting that those couple of inches grew back so quickly. I guess it's from this point on that any further growth would be slow given that you're so close to terminal. It's funny how that works though because occasionally even those who seem to be at terminal for a long time will be able to eek out more growth out of the blue.
I think you made the right decision to have the trim and freshen the ends. Now you can see if you can achieve new length.
Best,
Jason
Been there, done that.
If I trim, I get 1/2"/month back to the original length.
Overall gains are about an inch a year now, so terminal is a very slow moving target for me.
Hi again Trolleypup,
That was pretty much my experience, too. Prior to a couple of months ago this summer, I've had no professional trims for easily the past 7 years or more...
Every once in awhile I'd get all buzzed and excited that it looked like I definitely added another inch; then the following month would come, and when I'd next check in the mirror, it would look an inch or so SHORTER... OMG, it sometimes drives me CRAZY!!
The trim this summer gave me a brief break from that (LOL)!
Hi Jason,
Yeah, I find the whole experience interesting. Even my devastating Y2K haircut experience I now view as an important learning time for me -- it's part of what made me who I am today, especially considering it only made me stronger in my commitment to be a longhair for life, and to support and encourage others who wish to grow, to do so, without looking back.
Trimming a few inches off the bottom of my hair, when it is as long as it's gotten (as per the indoor photo taken back in January of this year), I know there's no way I can feel "devastated", even if I regret the trim afterward, because it will grow back quite quickly.
For now, my preference is to stay at or very near to my natural terminal length... Maybe I'll have my partner trim an inch or 2 off the bottom every year (as an annual ritual, perhaps?), as I decided to do this year; but that's about it -- yet who knows "for sure?" Human beings can sometimes suddenly find themselves in a different "mood" than a month or week or even day or 2 ago! Chances are, though, that at the very max, I'll probably only go an inch or 2 shorter than I just did this June... That would seem "super-short" to me! (LOL)

You keep calling yourself an "old geezer"...so, how old are you?
Speaking for myself I would say anybody over 60 has officially
entered geezerdom.
Believe it or not, somewhere in the Archives here, somebody once defined what the differences were between these various names and terminologies -- AND what the correct corresponding ages are!
.... and, just in case we forget the correct name and category, we can always just say, "old fart!"
In my mind, I swear I'm only 24 years old, honestly!
But, then I look in the mirror, and am SHOCKED to see a Santa Claus look-alike staring back at me...
What the hell happened? (And how come my California driver's license now says I'm 62?)

Hey Ken,
Great pic of you and your hair in action at the rose garden :) I must be weird today as I'm trying to picture this image of Bill and Larry holding the same camera taking this picture of you ;) LOL. I'm sure Larry was the trigger man though.Seriously your hair looks great even if its at terminal as I know I'm in the same boat.I haven't had a professional trim since 2005 as all I do is wash/condition my hair and brush it.Fairly simple routine that takes little time.I find my hair very low maintenance so I have to chuckle when I read about some guys who complain about what an ordeal it is having long hair.Cheers
Mârk
Thanks, Mark! And yes, I agree: in the greater scheme of things, I don't think long hair really takes all that much time to maintain -- and what time it does take, to me it's a joy and privilege to get to do it!
Re. complaining: I think somewhere deep deeeeeeep down inside... If you listen very carefully, if it's a longhair that's complaining, then he's really secretly BRAGGING! However, if it's a short-haired guy who's complaining... Well then, that usually means he's: JEALOUS!!!
Thanks again for the fun reply, Mark!
