I saw this article on manbuns in the New York Times.
NYTs Manbuns article
Interesting. Men are definitely becoming more adventurous in hairstyles. I was recently offered a clip to try out a bun, and would not feel self conscious wearing one. It's just that my preference is to wear a style which makes the length obvious.
I've worn buns but I much prefer have my hair down and loose. Heck I'm 61 years old, have long hair and refuse to hide it.
I'll take steps to avoid damage (buns, braids, pony tail,
pig tail) but i've got long hair and will proudly keep it long
until the day I die.
And at the age of 61 I don't care if it looks feminine, it's my hair and i'll wear it the way I want.
I find it funny that any article I've ever read on the topic of "Manbuns" seems to over-emphasize it as a trendy new style for men -- whereas in my opinion & experience (heck, I first wore my hair in a "man-bun" out in public was during the first time I grew my hair long, which was back in the '90s)... It's not as if I really "LIKED" the bun look; but, I did find the practicality of it outweighed my embarrassment (at first) of looking like an old maid librarian with a beard.
"Stylish?" Well, any guy that is young and good-looking enough can pretty much get away with murder (so-to-speak) -- a Hollywood-handsome celebrity, for example, will have flocks of attractive women, many admiring gay men, and photographers galore all chasing after them... REGARDLESS of whatever current "style" (or lack thereof) the celebrity is sporting!
Take an old longhaired geezer like me, on the other hand, and the man-bun becomes just a boring everyday chore that I do before going to work in the morning, or going outside on a windy day, or any number of everyday situations where I want to protect my hair, keep myself safe from harm (like if near a lot of machinery, or candles, or too many thorny rose bushes, etc....), or any other situation where I find the man-bun to be just plain COMMON SENSE.
The only thing that's "stylish" about a man-bun is that the wearer is confident enough in his own masculinity to go out in public looking like that, in spite of knowing that he really looks like a total doofus when he sees himself in the mirror!
- Ken (who is not at all "opinionated" - LOL!)
Do you look like a doofus with a man-bun? No. The real doofuses are the many Sheople who go for boring short hair styles. If you have long hair you're not a doofus.
