I'm just wondering what are the effects that smoking might have on hair?
I don't smoke, never have, and never will, but I'm just curious. It's bad for overall health, so it must be bad for hair too, right? I hate to even be near it...
Chris
Chris, It is very bad for you in general, but from what I know every puff cuts the oxygen in your blood and screws up the amount of good nutrients and such that go throught the blood and get to cells. Less nutrition to scalp, and less or worse quality of growth. It really cuts the blood flow to the capilaries at the skin level, which is where the hair growth cells are. I'm not a doctor but do read alot, plus my mom is a nurse
Plus, the smell gets into your hair. Yuck!
Right...hair seems to really attract smoke into it for some
reason. A friend smokes & it heads [pardon pun] directly for my hair and stays in it!
.
Unfortunately (since it's right under my nose), beard hair grabs on to cigarette smoke much more readily than scalp hair. I've found that Citreshine serum (basically pure or nearly pure silicone) prevents the smoke smell. I don't know if it keeps the smoke particles from sticking to the hair or keeps them from leaving the hair (hence no smell).
Amen to that! The smell from one of my cigars will linger in my beard for a week sometimes! Glad to hear the tip though! (Citreshine) My sister left some of that at my house, and I never knew what it was...might be using it now!
I too have noticed the connection between long hair/beards and pipes/cigars! (Matter of fact, there was a thread on this subject on the longhair convention site last week!)
Citreshine is a brand name. They have shampoos, conditioners, pomades, sprays, serums, etc. The stuff I'm talking about is the serum or polisher. It has the consistency of honey. To apply, place a single drop on one hand, rub both hands together, spreading the material as thinly as possible over both hands, then caress the hair gently at first, then more firmly with the coated hands.
I'll try some of the serum. Does anyone know how the rest of their products work?
Not to mention that it makes your hair smell bad!
Hey Chris!
I dunno what actual effects smoking has on hair, I'm sure it has an effect somehow, but I've had long hair AND I've smoked since I was 14. I'm 40 now. I don't smoke cigarettes and never have, (I HATE them!). I smoke a pipe, so I don't know if maybe that makes a difference. My hair is about 4" past shoulder length and is very thick. TOO thick actually! Mid back length is my goal and it seems to be coming along quite nicely.
A fellow briar man, eh? I think there might actually be a CONNECTION between long hair and pipe smoking. Just look at Gandalf. :)
The longer the pipe, the longer the hair. Perhaps that's the rule. I've always preferred churchwardens. How about you?
The Rev
Hey, cool! Another pipe smoker... and one with HAIR! Well, I hate to disappoint you, but corncobs are my favorite choice, although I DO own a few briars too. I'm just the "hill-billy" type I guess. hehe.
Actually, I've heard the longer the hair, the longer the... uh, well, nevermind. I won't go there!
Corn cob, you say? Sacre Bleu!! I too smoke zee corn cob!
I have a drawer full of them at work. One of my faves is a MM bulldog with a hardwood bottom (try that one on for "don't go there"). Nothing says, "American Tradition" like the venerable corn cob. (Okay, maybe baseball and pie and all that, but BESIDES that!)
The Rev
BTW, to keep it on topic, corn cob pipes were smoked by many famous people of Antebellum America, many of which had long hair like me. :)
