As I think others have posted in the recent past, I have also noticed more guys with long hair, at least shoulder length, usually tailed or in a bun. I just finished my shopping at the grocery store and saw at least a dozen customers and workers with long hair. Are we finally moving away from the shaved head to at least a reasonable length of hair?

I think this is a repeat of the post-Rambo phase, i.e. trendy hipsters are growing out their hair just to be able to wear it in a bun.
I don't think so.
Some wear their hair in a bun, but some of them wear it loose or in a pony tail.
Either way I welcome them to the quest for long hair.
I've also noticed more guys with long hair (and less guys with the boring short hair.)
I'm also noticing many women with short hair.
I've also noticed many a male employee at various jobs with long hair. Jobs that in the past would have insisted they cut their hair (but now they're allowed to keep their hair long.) these are at jobs like the deli at a local supermarket, the popcorn stand at the mall, or at other places where the employer would have insisted on a hair cut.
This.
I recently got hired at a major fast food chain that sells, er, hoagies. I was ready to have to fight to keep my hair, but it ended up being a nonissue, I just have to keep it up. Ironically, my beard, which is hardly more than stubble was the greater issue, with my boss insisting that I keep it "nice", whatever that means.
Congrats on the new job. I hope it works out well for you. What a relief that your long hair was not an issue.
To be perfectly honest, I haven't noticed any obvious trend, either towards longer or towards shorter hair, in the past year or so. What part of the world do you live in? Sometimes a trend will start somewhere and take some time to spread elsewhere. For example, some people have been noticing a recent trend in man buns, but I started noticing that around 5 years ago.
Trends and style, driven by media...I'm noticing more young men will longish hair...in media popular styles. When the media and trends change, their hair will change.
I don't see the twin cultural values of conservatism and conformity fading anytime soon...and as long as they are driving and enforcing appearance based standards (rather than performance based ones), having short hair will continue to have social and economic benefits.
