I work in a professional environment and was curious how long your hair had to be in order to get a decent low ponytail? My hair is now below my collar and looks pretty ragged, but the stylist that keeps the front and top trimmed (I know, I know.... you aren't supposed to do this....) has said that in about six weeks I should be able to pull it back in to a small tail. My hair grows *extremely* fast (about an inch per month) and she said that it should be long enough by then. Anybody know if this is possible?
Anybody know if this is possible?
I started growing my hair out in January '97. By February '98, I could pretty much put it in a small ponytail. But I think it'd take another year for it to look like a longhair ponytail.
When I trimmed the front of my hair to keep it out of my eyes, it took about 6 months to grow it long enough to put the front hair behind my ears to keep it out of my face and tie the back part of the hair into a small ponytail. It took a total of about 18 months to grow it long enough to tie all of it back into a ponytail. When growing it out, it kept falling into my eyes, but it was well worth the bother to go through the process of growing it long enough to tie all the hair into a ponytail. I measured and calculated that my hair always grows at a rate of about one-half inch (1.25cm) per month.
That will depend a lot on how curly your hair is. A decent tail
looks that way because it is longer than it is wide - preferably
at least twice so. Curly hair will make your tail wider and
shorter at the same time. So you may have to wait longer to get
enough length for a decent looking tail, if you have curly hair.

Bill,
My hair is straight as an arrow. It tends to curl just a bit on the ends as I comb it out. Also, my hair grows like a weed. I have a bit of a hormone imbalance due to heart surgery and that is helping matters also. It is now down past my shirt collar, but my stylist is waiting for the sides to grow to meet the back before she tries to put it up in a tail. She says that at the rate my hair grows, this should only be about four more weeks! Also, is there any length that is considered appropriate/inappropriate for someone who is about mid-fortyish? My bosses are very lenient about this as a programmer with mainframe experience during the year 2000 crisis is virtually assured a job. (The only qualifications are neat and clean.)
Thanks,

Bill,
I know that you are where you cannot pick up you email, but I appreciate the reply... The only thing I found humourous about this is when you stated that no one is going to tell a gray-haired man to cut his hair, you were not quite correct.... We moved my mom and dad in with us due to their very bad health and after all these years of being on my own, the first thing he said was "Son, you need to get a haircut." I guess some things just never change. Thanks again...Bill Beene, Tomcat 45
