Hey Guys!
I have been letting my hair grow freely for the past eighty-five (85) months. It has grown to collar bone length. I have not seen any significant growth in the last two (2) years. I think my hair has reached terminal length.
Is there a way to stimulate new growth in order to help my hair grow longer?
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Hi Raymond,
It's my understanding that terminal length is entirely (or almost entirely) based on one's genetically predetermined hair growth phase, which varies between two and six years, on average. It's quite possible that you have a growth phase closer to the shorter end of that range. Still, collar bone-length is nothing to sneeze at, and certainly qualifies as long hair :)! Have you ruled out any potential damage-related reasons for your hair not growing any further?
Best,
Val
I've been in the same boat for many years now. People kept telling me it was a genetic thing and I was gonna go bald like my dad and brother. My hair was extremely brittle and I'm hoping it's because I had been wearing my hair in a tight ponytail for 12 hours a day and it just was getting properly moisturized. Now I'm letting it hang loose and using leave in conditioner by Aussie. Hopefully I'll see some more length by Christmas!
Try using leave in conditioner...I know guys were pushing that and the Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner here years ago.
I've read here over the years that your longhair is susceptible to damage while u sleep and it was recommended to tie your hair into a loose ponytail at night. I use a black scrunchie but I'm gonna get some silk ones. They look frilly but it's only for bed and I live by myself. My hair is about the same length as yours and wavy but I haven't had tangles for a while-maybe this is why??

An Indian friend told me years ago that coconut oil is really good for moisturizing hair too. He said his mother used to massage it into his scalp. Might wanna try that to help protect the hair u have and hopefully it'll grow longer too.
Raymond: Biotin and protein shakes both seem to help for me.
You could be terminal, OR... you are deficient in something in your diet that is resulting in slow growth. Or you are experiencing breakage on the ends, that could be a result of a nutritional deficiency. Do you take MSM supplements? Are you getting enough B vitamins? I do know that MSM is beneficial for hair, skin, nails and joints. It promotes collagen production. You could try taking 1000 mg of MSM daily (You can buy it in a capsule, or a loose powder you can add to water).
Adding a B-complex might help. If you aren't a big eater of whole grains, you might want to at least add Biotin, which is one of the B vitamins. The MSM might let you grow a few more inches. It's worth a try, and fairly inexpensive.
If you aren't seeing any difference after a year of MSM and either B-complex or Biotin, then you probably reached terminal.
