I am sold on purchasing hair vitamins, but which is best? I found at least 2 different brands that sell "Hair, skin, and nails"-those are Nature Made and Nature's Bounty. I think Natrol has hair supplements with the same name too.
I've read here that biotin is important, so I was trying to compare that but what is the recommended amount for longhair? Nature Made only has 2500 mcg in 1 gel cap while Nature's Bounty has 5000 mcg in 3 gel caps. Maybe take 2 of the Nature Made to get about the same amount of biotin?

It's POSSIBLE that supplementing with biotin will help prevent thinning, to some degree. If memory serves, there have been controlled studies that indicated it reduces the rate of shedding. It may also slightly increase the rate of hair growth (but not significantly).
Ultimately, the things that make the rest of your body healthy will also be the most important factors - apart from genetics - in making your hair healthy. Eat clean, strong foods; exercise regularly; drink lots of water; DON'T smoke; get plenty of good quality sleep; reduce psychoemotional stress.
Oh, and stay away from scissors (or in the words of good ol' JohnB, "Eh, trimmers?")!
Cheers,
Val
