I started growing a full beard a month ago and noticed that people are no longer cracking jokes about my hair. I guess beards can be a distraction for some people?

I think the hyper masculinazation of a beard helps mitigate what many people find feminine in a man having long hair. Also beards and man buns have been a trend going on a couple years now, so maybe having the beard helps you 'fit in' more with a style, meaning you're less likely to be mocked.
Just a thought.
Bingo! U hit the nail on the head. I think guys I work with see long hair as feminine but facial hair throws that view right out the window. Right now my hair is about shoulder length (and I do see the awe in some people's eyes now) and looking a lot fuller since May when I let it flow loose from the ponytail holder. Hopefully I'll see it get below my shoulders to mid-back and I want to get my beard to that same point on my chest.

At the beginning of my long hair journey, I was in a restaurant and the server "Ma'med" me. The goatee and stash started that day !!
Hehe. I'm looking forward to that day Walter! But I don't like (and can't grow) either one! So, I will have fun with those kinds of people. You look wonderful with both though! Very glad to see you post and hope you are well my friend!

Thank You for the compliment....
I just declared Victory and retired !!
I have a beautiful 30 acre ranch overlooking Death Valley which I miss very much when I am traveling for work. I am in my mid 70s, in good health and still on top of my professional game. So I figure it is time to make a graceful exit, go home and "...play with my toys..."
I have had more adventures around the world than most...and I look forward to an exciting, adventurous retirement.
Nothing will distract people who are ignorant. Or maybe it's the other way around. please press on growing your hair, and beard.
