Hello everyone! As the title shows, I am actually leaving my former job! It has been a very long time coming as the work culture is very abusive. I have always loved hair and haircare, and it is a subject I am deeply passionate about. Besides becoming a barber or hairstylist, what other careers do you guys know about that has to do with hair? I figured I might as well marry this passion area with a new career! Thanks!
Also, in case it was buried, here is how long my hair is now
Hi OAD,
It took me a little while to figure out the basis of your new username, but your hair is a dead giveaway, along with the name of your YouTube channel, Onward and Downward, which is an awesome site. You’ve done a great job putting your channel together. I have seen your posts on Reddit as well.
Your hair is stunning, in perfect condition, and I understand your total dedication to long hair. I feel the same way about mine, and both of us agree that long hair is in our souls.
I am truly sorry, though, to hear that you have been subject to such a hostile and abusive culture in your workplace, and getting away from that place, to protect your health and sanity, is an excellent decision on your part. I had no idea that things were that awful.
I have to apologize for not having any useful suggestions for a job that would be a good fit for you, other than the ones you mentioned, that would respect you as a person, as well as respect your desire to keep your long hair. However, I should mention that I’ve been retired for 15-20 years now, in my early 70s, but my job was as a scientist, and had no issues with my long hair at the time, although it was a lot shorter than it is now. Hopefully, someone else in our MLHH community will have some good ideas that would work for you.
My best wishes to you in the future.
David
Greetings OAD,
Very sorry to hear that you are getting push back about your longhair at your current job. Like David had mentioned I had no issues having long hair during my career as an HVAC service tech but I did have to take precautions to protect it out in the field which usually meant wearing a baseball cap to keep it in place and getting caught in things. However I've been retired almost two years now so it really is a non issue anymore.
As far as a new career for you, that would be hair friendly, I'd imagine IT work, the cosmetics industry, or possibly even sales would be some options. However whatever you choose likely will require training if you've never done the work before which isn't a biggie as people change careers all the time during their earning years.I look forward to learning whatever you decide to embark on my friend.Maybe others will chime in with other suggestions.Keep us posted and by all means take care of your hair! Cheers.
