Hi,
I don`t mean to fall into the racism trap, but I am a student in a British University. My ethnic origin is Indian and sometimes people take me for a latin guy, but why is it that when white guys have long hair, no one seems to say anything, but when people (especially here in that British town where I`m studying) see me, they call me "freak". I`m mostly the target of little girls, and they even take me for some kind of pedophile. It`s crazy !
Does it mean because I`m not white and I have long hair, I don`t have the right to go out and walk peacefully ? The British people are going mad. They are becoming paranoid.
What do u guys think about that ?
you're dealing with ignorance- plain and simple. yes it's crazy. the people you're encountering are racists. there's nothing you can do to change that. the best recourse you have is simply to ignore. be the better person by just not responding.
...your are in the UK where (it seems) people are less tolerant
of anything like long hair. (God forbid they sould ever label
you as 'gay'as pedophile is bad enough!!)
people might react.
A man's having long hair is an assertion of his personal strength and independence. When a minority man asserts his right to be strong, the power structure gets especially nervous. When everyone began growing longer hair in the 1960s, no one incurred more wrath than black men, when they grew afros. Before then, black men were not only expected to keep their hair short, they were expected to keep it very short - certainly shorter than the hair of white men.
Almost always, demands concerning the hair of others are about power. They don't own you, so if you tell them anything at all, tell them that. And walk proud with your mane, which you have every right to do.
I think it differs massively from place to place...I'm a white guy with long hair (off to Uni next year) and there isn't a day that goes by without some little kid making an insulting comment. You're right...it is crazy, hope you can stay above it all.
You know it is very sad that you get insulting comments, they DO NOT have a right to insult you just because you look different. It doesn't matter from wich ethnic group you are, evry men has a right to wear their hair long when they wish that, like evry women. Try to ignore these mean people and DO NOT CUT your hair just that these people stop insulting you. If you do cut your hair, you just show you gave up "the fight". You should be proud of your hair and be strong! Like Bill said on the other reply : "A man's having long hair is an assertion of his personal strength and independence." Remember this always! I wish you the best!
which university are you at? im from bournemouth town (not the uni) which is on the south coast and as it seems to be a foreigner hot spot, we never seem to have those sorts of problems at least ive never seen any. ive yet to have any insults at all... today an old lady appologised to me because she called me 'love' and she said it was because I had longer hair, things like that are definatly not insults. but i do know what you mean about certain british people. we call them townies, lol. we are not all like that.
But, what do YOU think about that Tarikh?
Longhairs tend to be real individuals and have long hair because they are confident in themselves and mostly don't care what negative stuff others have to say about their look because they mostly understand the "issue" of hair as opposed to social conformity.
little girls? Big deal, man. Little kids will say rude, impolite things.
