Is it me? I have the impression that most white guys with afros originally had straight hair, but they changed it into afros to appear more "cool". Is it possible?
It's possible, but some white guys have naturally curly hair too. I don't know if there's any way to tell if it's natural or a perm. I tend to assume it's natural, because I don't think it's very common for guys to perm their hair.
Hang on. Why focus on one hair type? Isn't it fairly true that all of us have grown our hair long out of some sense of "coolness"? I would say that I grew my hair long because I always wanted to, and at at 41 (when I started), it occurred to me that I don't owe my hair or hair length to anyone else. For me, that was "cool". If I felt I wanted curly hair, I'd perm it. Not too long aga (like a year) afros on anybody were still a "joke". Now, they are back. I see this as all the same. Men are free, or are claiming our freedom, to wear our hair in the ways that appeal to us. Nothing more, nothing less.

My hair will never be straight, it's naturaly curly. And if I simple wash it dry and brush out it ends up a bit afro.
Like so...
I can do that as well. Hate it.
