If any macho male 'get-yer-hair-cut' type challenges you about looking like a girl or something, take a good look at him.
Does he have a beard? If not, tell him that clearly he must be going for the female look too, as nature intended men to have beards!
Does he have an ear-ring? Ear-rings are at least as 'effeminate' as long hair!
Ascertain whether he is bigger than you, then run if neccessary!

Semi-off topic...
It's kind of funny. It seems that most of the people on this board don't care what others think of their appearance, but are still hung up on the whole "masculine VS feminine" thing.
Actually, my left ear has two earring holes, but I rarely wear earrings -- my cat (stole) lost most of them. Aside from that I'm fairly large (6'1" and 220 lbs). However, where I live, no one really seems to have a problem with my hair. I went to the store last night with my hair "rocked out" and didn't get any reactions at all (except for a few nice looks from women). Take care.
