Hey fellers
I grew my hair out from a buzzed head exactly one year ago. I have NOT had a trim yet. I think it's getting time. I have a widows peak, so the long hair in front is kind of a "v" shape. It looks pretty bad. Im thinking about cutting the hair all the same length to make it look better. I realize this will reduce the amount of hair, increase growing out time, etc. Im just curious at what length would you recommend getting it trimmed. Its about 8 inches right now.
Ive thought about waiting until I can pull it back into a tail, but it's pretty ratty, especially since I have fine, uncontrollably wavy hair.
Thanks
(Dont you love constantly reading these "when to cut" posts?)

Just keep using the logic above, Jason, and you will never have long hair. Getting long hair is like having to cross a swift river. You have to go through the awkward stage to "get to the other side". By cutting your hair before you can put it in a tail, you are saying the current is too swift so you will stop in the middle. You are just prolonging the agony.
You can tough this one out, Jason. Just stay away from the barber and your hair will take care of itself. All it needs is time. And the less cutting you do on it, the less time it will need.
Yes, but what about split ends? I have my ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks to keep from getting the splits that also prevent one from getting really nice results in the "ends" (sorry couldn't resist). I have found that if I go much beyond the 8 weeks between trims, my ends really start splitting. At the "awkward" stage, I was going about every 6 weeks/ Prolong the agony, yes, definitely, but I maintained really nice lines with good lines and movement through the bad stages. And my Stylist, of course, loves the frequent visits.
YE$, I'm $URE $HE DOE$!
The topic here was "split ends in the awkward stage" - If you're getting lots of split ends while you are still in that stage (while the ends of your hair are relatively young), are you sure you're not doing something drastically wrong for your hair? I'd hope my stylist would be more concerned over preventing split ends than with cutting them off. ;-) But of course that's not where the bucks are. Selling you products that damage your hair and then repetitively cutting off the damage is much more profitable....
Loved it!
It has been pointed out to me to stay away from the blow dryer as often as I do, and the water here is extremely hard - city water is well water, all of which add up I think!
I guess Im lucky. I havent had a haircut in exactly one year...and no split ends. Maybe cuz' my hair is really fine? Or maybe Im actaully taking care of it!
Anyway, Ive decided against the haircut. Im using your patented "2 week" rule (see Bill's Page).
