Here goes: What's the story with split ends? How does hair split? And if it does, what of it? Will your hair look noticibly different? When you talk about hair splitting, are you refering to a single strand? If so, how can anyone have the vision to spot damage? How is washing one's hair less often supposed to safeguard against split ends? I understand that one's natural oil may keep the strands of hair together, but if all I do is comb the hair back and leave it that way (with minimal physical contact), how do the ends get split?
Spilt ends are probably more discussed and argued over on this board than anything else.
When your hair gets damaged, it can either be pulled out, broken off, or the end can be split. The split, just like a split in a piece of wood, can then run up along the hair, making that hair so weak that it breaks.
Some people suggest you should look for split ends and trim them off. Others say that split ends are'nt a problem, so just cioncentrate on looking after your hair.
What damages hair?
That depends on the individual person. Just as every piece of wood is different, and some pieces are stronger than others, everybody's hair is different. Some people can do things with their hair which would damage other people's hair a lot.
Here's a few things to avoid:
- brushing your hair too hard or when wet
- using a tie which is too tight
- being careless when taking out the tie
- washing your hair more often than it needs
- using poor quailty shampoo which takes too much out of the hair
No doubt other people can add other dont's
How can you tell whether you have split ends or not?
Going from cold to warm temperatures as you would do if you cycled to work, for example, will also tend to give the ends of your hair a hard time.
... that cold can really damage your hair unless it is wet & freezes.
