I don't think too many stylists charge more for a layered cut than a
one length cut, but I could be wrong. I think many hairstylists think
themselves as artists and hair as a canvas to create their art. The
same old style probably bores many stylists after awhile.
A layered cut is easier to cut wrong, but if you really like a layered
style, this shouldn't discourage you.
you are correct that stylists are not likely to charge extra for a layered style... what i was suggesting- perhaps wrongly- is that the stylist in question was anticipating more frequent visits to maintain a layered look. i can't argue on whether or not a layered style is suitable for a person w/out being able to see his facial structure...
the original John (this msg thread) is quite fortunate to have found a stylist who has allowed John's hair to reach his waist... i have not had any luck in that respect; which has resulted in my not visiting a stylist in over 2 years... an innocent-sounding offer to trim 'split ends' or to neaten the back had routinely resulted in my parting company with as much as 6" of length in one instance. this also has tainted my objectivity concerning stylists. it appears that at least the ones in my area (connecticut) tend to be scissor-happy.
I also have had problems with getting exactly what I asked for from
stylists, until I started going to more serious salons that (sigh)
charge more money ($20-40). Every time I've gone to a cheapo
Supercuts-type place with some Joe/Janet Schmoe who just got his/
her cutting license, I'd never know what I'd end up with, but the
places with experienced stylists who command higher fees have always done exactly what I've asked.
When I go in, I always tell them to not to cut it straight, or
rounded, or whatever, but to just leave the length as is, and trim
the split ends only- I hate the idea of sacrificing unnecessary
inches, and like look of the non-uniform "natural" length better anyway.
I would vote against layering- in my own experience, it was a
haircare disaster. Much harder to control, and more split ends showing up all over, rather than just as the bottom.
Oh, and you can see what my hair looks like, since my girlfriend
has multiple pictures of me on her website. Go to:

I'm the one in the rusty-red floppy thing (It's traditional
Irish clothing, a leine- I work at Renaissance Faires) and also
in the herald trumpeter outfit.
