Thought I'd share a post taken from the internet infidels open discussion forum. Right on Hazel!! I included a link to the original post.
I read in the Wall Street Journal today that the Federal appeals court in Atlanta, rejected a case concerning four
men who were fired for having long hair. The Judges followed a tradition of saying that bans on long hair for men
only, were not a violation of mens civil rights. These guys were working for
Blockbuster. What about long hair would dissuade someone from renting a video.
Why do businesses make rules about things that really dont matter. I have a store of my own and although I
dont have any employees I do have a dress code for myself. I need to convey a sense of confidence,
cleanliness and intelligence. Im a custom picture framer and I deal with many pictures that
are irreplaceable. These three qualities are necessary to give my customers a sense of security. I cant
conceive of how a mans hair length would influence that.
This reminds me of a woman who was fired from an airline for not wearing any makeup. I havent worn make up
in the last seven years. Does that make my MBA null and void. Or the four years Ive spent framing disappear.
Or the respect I get from my co-workers at my part time job a myth. People trust me because I do a good job.
There isnt anyone alive who can convince me that Im a less valuable employee or worker because I dont put
rouge on my cheeks and waste time applying eyeliner. I wish businesses were more interested in the caliber of
work rather than incidentals.
Sometimes I feel like the only one left in the world with any common sense. ( I know its not true.) Id rather work
with a man with tattoos and hair to the ground, who showed up on time, was polite and respectful. Than half of
the bozos with short hair and neckties that I have had the misfortune to meet, let
alone work for. Respectability and respectfulness are not found in some arbitrary outward appearance, it is a
fundamental part of persons character. One I wish more people had. Thats, one of the reasons, why I like being
an atheist. I am responsible for my own ethics. Im not just going along with some rules dictated by another to
avoid later retribution. I show up for work and do my best out of respect for my customers and co-workers.
Because I value them as individuals outside of myself. Because that is the kind of world I would
like to live in.
it sounds like our legal system missed the point & sent a dangerous message to personnel depts nationwide... it's ok to dictate how one looks not only on the job, but off the job as well. i feel fortunate that of my 2 jobs, neither cares about my hair length. they care that i show up on time and do my work. neither has been disappointed.
bans on long hair in the workplace basically pander to the ingnorance of people who believe that guys with long hair are irresponsible or high on drugs. instead of furthering a more enlightened policy of judging a person on his merits, companies reward people for outward appearance over content of character. the 'yes man' has a look, too. as long as corporate arrogance is upheld in our nations courts, companies will usurp individuals of their rights to look as they please off their jobs.
i hope the 4 young mem were able to find jobs without cutting their hair & that they realize they are better off without 'lackluster' video. freedom does not mean having the workplace dictate how we live our lives. boycott 'blackblister' vidoe.
I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH A SHORT HAIRED BIMBO DODO AND HAVE BEEN BOYCOTTING BLOCKBUSGTER FOR THE PAST 5 MONTHS. EVIDENTLY THEIR POLICY FOR HIRING IS BASED MORE ON WHAT IS ABOVE THE SKULL RATHER THAN WHAT IS IN IT...
