I need your support to through the summer with my "long hair". This year is
a unseasonable hot and humid summer in Detroit. Average day high is
95 with 90% humidity. You know how difficult it is with long hair. If you tie hair,
it is too heavy and scalp is always wet. If you let hair down, it likes wear a
sweater. Many of you have long hair for many years, I believe you should have more
experience to through the hot summer. I really hate to cut it off, which is very
shining and silky. Please help. Thanks.

JM, You will have to wear your hair in some sort of chignon, bun, wreath, circle etc. at the back of the head, crown, or in top dead centre to keep cool. You might also try double braids. It would appear they are the only ways to keep your great hair off the neck and sides of the head wher it tends to store heat. Ask the ladies for their suggestions as to what they think would look good as a long-hair keep-cool style on men or boys.

I use a tie to pull my hair into a pony tail, and then use a barret to pull the pony tail up to the top of the back of my head where it falls, and it is not on my neck and I get a lot of positive comments. I am a mature professional person and get lots of support to which I simply say "thanks."

It really depends on how long your hair is.. Mine is to the mid-back and thick.. I live in the southeast and this summer has been hell so far.. I usually wear mine in a 'topsytail' or a loose braid..

well, this may not address the weight issue, but mine is tied back & down its length at 4-5" intervals (6 ties, total). this not only keeps it tied back, but into sort of a 'rope' form... which keeps it from blanketing my shoulder blades, much coolor than a traditional ponytail & a hell alot easier to do than a braid. i guess i'll soon appreciate the weight issue as most of the old 'layering' is finally long enough to be tied back w/out starting the tail higher.
there's probably not much you're going to to about the weight... you'll need to cope with a bit of discomfort for a couple of months, but your patience will soon be rewarded with autumn weather.
if it gets too unbearable, consider a layered look or 2-level look, with the back kept as long as you please with the top + sides shortened. this will remove alot of the insulation without a complete shearing.
whatever you choose, good luck

I love long hair, but it was summer that took mine away. Several years ago in July the temperature climbed over 100 and I reached my limit with my heavy hair and sweating head. I stopped my car at about 5:15 PM at a barber shop and had it buzzed to 1/2 inch. It was a relief, cool, looks fine--but still I envy a guy with nice long hair.
We have had an exceedingly hot June. It is now either the hottest or the second hottest June on record. Several days it has been in the 100s with high humidity. One night it didn't get out of the nineties until 1 AM or something like that.
What I do is very effective. I simply braid my hair. It's quick, and with the kind of hair I have, I don't even need a hair tie. For maximum effect, when I braid my hair, I tip my head back so the braid starts high up on my head. This brings all the hair off my neck. The final braid is thin compared to loose hair. Besides, it swings back and forth, exposing every portion of my back and neck to cooling air.
