What is really wrong with a mullet?

nothing. it's just a hairstyle... short in front, longer in back. like certain other hairstyles, its wearers are often subject to ridicule, so it can be useful as a social 'filter' to those for whom it is important to be among positive, open-minded people.
We seem to have this question come up at least every couple of months.
Can't we put this and a couple of the things that get asked over and over on a FAQ page or something? I think that some people wouldn't feel so "offended" if they could read something about it as opposed to getting people's personal opinions about it.
(but then again, this is a longhair discussion board and is a safe place for personal preferences in favor of long hair).
Nothing really. i had one in the early 80s.
finally gave up and now have waist length
hair.
The main reason I gave up on mullet is
I couldn't get hair care professionals
to grasp the concept of how to
cut my hair (short in front, long in
back). I had it with 1/4" in front and
half way down the back in the back.
I liked the way it looked, but
never could get the hair care professionals
to grasp the concept.
This is exactly the kind of mullet i would like to grow. Too bad about hair care professionals
Because most who sport the style look ridiculous, the mullet now has a social stigma go with it, even for those who might even look somewhat good in a mullet (although, i've only heard of such people, never seen)
Good question, but it's already been discussed at length quite recently (see HappyPuppy's post).
A lot of people on this board get quite agitated over how much they hate mulletsm even more than they hate buzzcuts, it seems.
So far as I am concerned, anyone who grows any of their hair should be applauded, even if it is just a few inches of a rat's tail. It's a start, and they may later on decide to grow all of their hair. But that's just a personal opinion, and I know it isn;t shared by others.
pelt, i don't feel there is really anything "wrong" with a mullet. if that is the type of hair someone wants and it works for them, then fine. many inside this little board have extreme difficulty accepting it (as if hair all the same length is the only acceptable style) but that is their problem, not the one with the mullet.
i personally am not a fan of the extreme mullet, (the old billy ray cyrus style) but that is just my opinion. i have seen mullets on guys that actually look quite nice. to each his own.
some associate a mullet cut with a red-neck lifestyle i.e. those who live in the south, or work labor-intensive kinds of jobs...but this is simply a stereotype, not a live-by-it-or-die guideline. just yesterday i saw a mullet cut on a high school band teacher who was on television in preparation for the macy's thanksgiving day parade...and he was from pennsylvania...not the south.

For the most part, I don't think there's anything wrong with a mullet. I've seen some long ponytail mullets that look fantastic. And some guys with really straight hair who buzz the top and sides but leave the back really long also look good. Generally speaking, I think mullets have gotten a bad rap. There really are some great looking mullets out there. (I just wish womeone would come up with a different name for the style. Mullet just doesn't sound very good).
Here are a couple of examples of mullets that I think look damn good. The first one is spectacular:

The second one is very interesting. It's a guy with a a salt & pepper military style flattop - and long hair in the back (ie: mullet). Personally, I think he looks great with that style:
