so Paul said:
"Is not even nature itself teaching you that if a man, indeed,
should be having long tresses, it is a dishonor to him."
NO! Nature teaches the opposite... LONG hair is natural and the cold,
steel scissors we use to cut hair are UNnatural..
Paul's statement might have been misunderstood all these years.
The word "dishonor" [atimia]literally means UN-value...
Maybe 'UNvalued' (or not respected) because it got into the man's way...
while doing battle or
while working the fields, etc.?
TOday it's a completely different story.
Here's a battle cry against those who think being a LONGhair
is a CRIME:
'Dishonor' is NOT a sin...DIShonor means UN-value...
Adam&® did not own SCISSORS!
What say you?
None of the Christian argument has any sway on my lifestyle with wanting to have long hair, seeing as I don't believe much of it has any real relevance in the universe or in my personal life.
But that's for another message board. :)
well they can try but I can shoot the scriptures back at them.
Adam & Eve did each other's hair...I'm sure of that!
If you keep reading along in that area of the scripture...it says basically I think, that the church has no such custom to regulate such things.
OR . . . perhaps unvalued refers to the fact that when Paul lived in the Roman Empire, short hair was the status quo hairstyle for men, and Rome was even a harsher place than the US when it came to fitting in an being accepted by the society. Perhaps "unvalued" meant "unpopular". Ring some bells?
Robert--Latin teacher and once clergyman
"Perhaps "unvalued" meant "unpopular". Ring some bells?" ~Robert
And the very same word is used of things like 'piss-pot' and
other vessels of 'shame'...
Perhaps Christians were having enough trouble...
being feed to lions and such...
while i'm no expert on scripture
what paul said most people seem to take out of context
he never actually said it was a sin, he said it was a shame and he wasent refering to it being a shame to actually have long hair, he was saying that at the time and place he lived it was considered a shame by society
and also in the roman empire, every male had to have short hair because it was a way to show that people were submissive to the emperor, (women were allowed to have it long) so in a way i believe that's how were in this backwards belief that most of society shares that men should have short hair and women should have long hair
people never got over it because it's been ingrained in their minds for over 2,000 years
by the way i am a born again christian and i don't believe having long hair is wrong
i mean look at how many people had long hair in the bible
even JESUS himself has long hair
(please let's not get into that debate again lol)
i believe long hair on BOTH genders is what's natural, and cutting it short is NOT but if a person choses to have short hair then that's their choice and i respect their decision
I say you're a moron.
