My hair is now reaching my elbows. I got it trimmed a few inches below my shoulders last year. I haven't had it cut since then. Now the ends are getting pointy and jagged. Should I get a trim again or just forget it? I currently like the length, but I'm concerned about the split ends. And does a straight, even length make it look unnatural?
The answer to this question is one of opinion. However, I'd like to make one comment relating to fact. I'm not sure what you are referring to when you mention "pointy" hair. However, you should know that the result of the normal hair cycle is that after the rest phase, the hair begins growing, forming a narrow hair shaft. Gradually over the subsequent weeks, the diameter of the hair shaft increases until the hair growth is in full swing. This results in a tapered end to the hair, which, in my opinion, is more resistant to splits than a blunt cut end. I think most would agree that split ends should be trimmed off. However, you can do this without affecting undamaged hair.
Take a small lock of hair and twist it. All the ends will stick out. Trim only the splits this way.
There exist a scissor with a heatable edge for sealing the ends of the hair while cutting it. Try this while removing the "forked" ends!
