I wanted to put my hair into a ponytail the other day because it was so hot but didn't have an elastic with me. A girl friend of mine said I could use one of her large clips. I was a bit sceptical at first, but she talked me into it. It actually felt quite nice and smoothed out the tail and made it much wider. I actually went out with it like that in the end and got no adverse comments. Have any others used these sorts of clips.
By the way - she never got hers back :-)
I've used different types of clips (barrettes) many times without no comments on them. There are quire different styles available from fluffy butterfly styles downto solid metal engravings - so you should be able to pick a style fit for yourself.
Be warned, however, that you should collect all the hair so that it does not get damaged by the lock mechanism when you close the clip.

This is also the way I came to begin to wear barrettes in my hair. The elastic I had with me broke, so my SO offered a wide barrette. She had to help me the first few times putting it in, but I liked how it looked and spread out my hair.
The only comments I get are from women when I wear a tortoise shell barrette, complimenting on how good it looks in my brown hair. I wear a barrette whenever it seems appropriate....every few days or so.
