I'm 57 years old and have always wanted long hair. My mom curled my hair when I was a kid (7-8 years old) and I liked it, but felt guilty and embarassed. My wife is not supportive of long hair on men. Is it to late for old guys like me? My hair right now is 4-5 inches in length. How do I get over these feelings of embarassment, I'd like to curl my hair but I don't want a perm. I've called several salons but they are relutant to schedule an appointment for a wet set.

I'm 56, and currently have short hair for business and social reasons, JJ. Hair grows an average eof 0.5 in./month, but whether this slows in older age, I'd have to ask the medical/bio types. Also, is the maximum possible growth reduced as we age. We'd have to experiment. Stay off caffeine, alcohol, take special Vit. B supplements as recommended by those whove had good experience with them. It's lousy science, but maybe we could plot some sort of scatter diagram.
Evidence shows that perm chemicals could kill long hair.

I'm 54 and have hair that is about 5" to 6" long all over now. I've had long hair often (shoulder length) since the seventies and always liked having it set. I plan to let it get shoulder length again. I't still grows but it is more grey than before so I'm considering some subtile coloring. I get a perm about every 3 months. I am happly married and a technical professional in management.
I get my hair set often in salons. I have had very little trouble finding ones that do it. I just call and ask. 85% of them say OK. Your approach should be frank, confident and respectfull. I think you may be surprised how this pays off. In my opinion, you sound like a unique person and should have no reason to be shy about this desire. If your approach reflects shame or low self regard, then the responses will often key to it accordingly and likely be negative.
My advise is quit taking yourself to the "woodshed" about this. Your situation may pose limitations on your freedoms but you don't have to let it make you self critical. Perhaps if you were more positive about your hair desires your wife might become more accepting of it. I don't know; maybe/maybe not. Might be worth a try.
Good luck %:-)

Thanks for the suggestions I did find a small local salon that has turned out to be very nice to work with. They understand customer service and both of the stylists have a preferance for long hair. They have been very helpfull and understanding. I'm going in tomarrow for my first wet set, a little scary, but I'm also looking forward to it. Thanks again for the support.
First I envy you about your mum curling you as a young boy. As for me, it was the opposite, my mother wanted me always with a short haircut. By that time I discovered that not all men's curls were natural. Until the day when I was waiting at the barber's. I saw a (masculine) gentleman coming over from the ladies' dpt., as the hoods were only there. Then I was struck by the discovery that this gentleman's head was covered with curlers all over. And then his beautiful hair was combed out resulting in tight waves as Nixon liked to wear. From that moment I wanted to be a permed hair man.
I wish you many pleasant years, using curlers ever and ever...
