Wow. Been on the board awhile answering posts, but heres my very first questuin!
O.K, admittedly, I use lots of Gel (alcohol free, natch!!) and i work with the public, so Ive been slicking it back insurance man/grecian man style. And surprisingly, getting very positive comments, sometimes outta the blue too. Anyway, I work with a fellow longhair (im just a wannabe long hair, at nearly 5 months) He said that gel stunts the growth of hair if you use to much. I always wash mine out after work, but is what he saying true?? How can it stunt growth??? He suggested I use a combination of gel and baby oil to get the slickness im going for (until im out of the awkward stage) Just went to Scrawl-mart and picked up some. So whats the deal??? Gel stunting growth?? Old wives tale or scientific fact? All answers will be considered! Oh, that baby oil thing, hope that works. Seems kinky kinda though. Ah well......
Nope no way. Gel does not cause your hair growth to stall. I used to put gel in my hair as in the awkward stage. My hair is now past nipple length after 2 1/2 years. So don't worry about it.
I agree since I've been using gel for a long time and my hair
is still growing at the normanl rate of 1/2 inch per month.
So don't worry and
Good Luck!
I would not recomend using baby oil. Not only will it make your hair really greasy and dirty looking if you use too much, from what I hear about mineral oil it can actually dry your hair out too much in the long run. As for gel stunting hair growth, I dont think theres any truth to that. I used a lot of gel earlier in the awkward stage, and there was no noticable change in growth (still 1/2 inch a month). Maybe measure your hair once a month to see if its still growing at the same rate.

See my recent progress pictures. I've been using gel since day one
and have been getting great hair growth. If you have to use something
greasy in your hair consider BrylCreem. I used it for years when I
was a short hair. It is a mild grease that is specifically designed
to go on the hair. It doesn't dry like gel. It will leave your hair a
bit greasy but if you wash it out after work it will be ok.
