I was browsing through a couple of metal magazines today, one of which polled readers on who/what were the most negative things to happen to the music industry from the previous year. This being a magazine supposedly indifferent to the mainstream, the majority of responses cited Chad Kreuger/Nickelback as the most regretful thing they could remember about music in 2002. The reason why I'm taking the time to mention this on a website about Men and Long Hair is b/c a picture of the band (Nickelback) was provided along with the prestigeous dishonor, complete with a caption describing Chad "With his girly hair and bandmates" (Or something very close to that effect).
My question to you is this: What do you think of Kreuger's hair, save you can set aside any attatchment/indifference you may feel towards his music in your response? Do you think Chad's hair looks girly (and explain why you feel that way, because isn't ALL long hair somewhat girly given contemporary trends and fashions directed at men?)?
Personally speaking, while I don't think Chad has the best hair when it comes to long haired men in rock, I DO think he looks a lot more distinct than he did back when he had short, buzzed cuts. If I were him, I'd stick with the hair he currently has... Maybe I'd try altering it, but I most certainly wouldn't cut it just because someone claimed that it looked "girly".
I think that Chad's hair looks great, and I think Nickelback are a ok band. I hope he doesn't cut, but I can see it happening as Scott Stapp from Creed has cut. I read a interview with Dee Snider from Twisted Sister where he said something along the lines of this, "When I go check out a band nowadays, I can't tell the difference between the crew and the band. I end up asking the lighting guy if he's the guitarist." I found this quote really funny and true. Not saying that everyone in a band should be a long hair but at least try to have a unique "look". People want to see something out of the ordinary, not a band that looks like they are stock brokers by day:p
I really don't understand why people are so negative towards Nickelback. I'm not exactly fanatical about them, but they've kept going all these years and Chad's voice keeps up with the best of them.
Long hair suits a guy like Chad because his face would look too thin and drawn without it. It looks great, in my opinion. Has anyone got a pic to share of him with short hair?
I think the reason why the majority of people cited Chad/Nickelback as their most dreadful memory of music in the last year can be attributed to their general preference for music: This magazine focuses primarily on metal and alternative acts, as opposed to magazines like Rolling Stone and Spin (which try to cater to a much wider range of readers), so I suspect that most people resent Nickelback because they received so much more attention and commercial success than the bands that they (metal fans)regard as better.
Personally speaking, I agree with your point about how Chad's voice has kept up well: I should know, as I myself enjoyed a few of the band's tunes before they became famous. I lost a lot of interest in the band, however, once they altered their sound and found commercial success as a result of it. It was more than the fact that I didn't care much for their new sound: I came to HATE the band because that bloody song "How you remind me" was overplayed to death. I just couldn't stand their sound after so much saturation. Not only were mainstream rock stations suddenly going crazy over Nickelback (Whereas previously they snubbed the band), but Nickelback became lumped in the top-10 amongst the likes of Britney and Ja Rule on teenybopper/pre-pubescent mainstream radio. They became too popular for their own good, in my opinion. Commercial success does not mean bands have to cater to mainstream/top 40 audiences: Look at Pearl Jam, a band with integrity if there ever was one.
I do think looks better with long hair than without, but I also agree with another statement that asserts that his hair looks somewhat "funny", probably because of the complexion of his face or something. I still don't know about his hair looking "girly", though... That's why I've asked for your input!
I don't like his hair, but to be honest (sorry if this sounds mean) I think he looks rather funny, I'm not sure what it is but I think it's something other than the hair. And about the buzz cut, well I don't know why so many people here think it's either long hair or a buzzcut but if he were to cut there are tons of short styles to choose from, not just the more common ones.
I'm begining to wonder if we are going to lose SixStringThing to the
legions of short hairs. It seems that you are becoming more fixated
with short hair styles. Is this a hair life crissis? Hang in there
man. You are right on the verge of getting out of the awkward stage. please don't give up now!!
lol no its not a crisis, I'm just very different from most people on this board. Unlike most people here, for me long hair is not a lifestyle just a hairstyle. While I prefer long hair, I don't fit the image of a longhaired guy very well, other than my tastes in music I am quite a trend follower. I do like long hair and it would make me a bit upset if I cut it but it would not be the end of the world. When I started growing my hair I was a huge "metalhead" type guy and wanted hair to my waist, my tastes since then have really changed and right now I want it shoulder blade lenght at the most. The good news is as of right now I have no plans to cut it so no need to worry but I doubt I will have long hair into my adult years (i'm 17, almost 18 right now)
I suppose I'm one whose longhair is a life style. When I was a kid and
forced to have short hair I hated every minute of it. But I hope your
desire for long hair lasts for a long time. You are also right that
there are lots of choices between very long and buzz cut. There are
also some nice "long" short hair styles. And I don't mean mullet either!
If I wasn't so into long hair something like a reverse mullet might be
fun. kind of short or "normal" hair in the back with long (at least
chin length) bangs in front. But for now and the foreseeable future my
style is terminal length.
Your adult years don't start until you are 30!
yep i guess so, I definately think I will have longhair all throughout my college years and maybe a bit after (who knows I might keep it forever) if I do cut later on there's no way I'm getting a buzzcut though. And i'm still thinking about that undercut lol I'm actually thinking it might go good w/my more "modern style".. I'm just waiting until I can tie all my hair back and then I can decide.
So what is your more "modern style"??? Are you talking about hair or
clothes?
Definately clothes and appearance, as stated earlier, with the exception of my tastes in music I am quite the trend follower... this sort of clashes with long hair.. but for now i'm keeping my hair.
Not if you are the begining of a new long hair trend!;)
I, personally, like his hair and also think he's a decent looking guy. I'm not sure what everyone else is talking about...
First of all....what does his hair have anything to do with how good their musis is? If ur listening to a band on the radio or on a CD, u can't see them. And I also find it weird that it was a Metal magazine that said it, considering how most metal bands have long hair.
I like Nickelback. They're not the greatest band in the world, but their better than most of the other bands out there nowadays. I don't think his hair looks girly. But I also consider if ur hair looks "girly" to be a compliment.
When u think of a girl's hair...it is usually tidy and clean. I want my hair to look like a girl's. I may not want to have a girl style maybe...but as far as the look of the hair..."girly" is a compliment.
I love Heavy Metal...especially the 80's metal/hair bands. They wore make-up, lipstick, 2 cans of hairspray and everything...so I guess that WAS girly....but, I thought they looked great. (Not saying I wear lipstick or make-up) but their hair looked great. I was just talking on AIM and I have Sebastian Bach (lead singer of Skid Row) as my buddy icon....this dude said he looked like a girl. His hair looks great, and I think he is handsome (Note-I'm not gay).
You can hardly say Chad looks girly. I like Nickleback's music, or some of it. Anyway he's got a beard, that hardly looks girly. I still maintain the trend seems to be towards longer hair for men these last 2 years or so. There are fewer shaved heads and buzzcuts around these parts nowadays.
Cheers, Barry
Um, no, I don't think they meant that Chad himself looks girly; just his hair.
