What are your thoughts about cutting the downy hair at the base of the neck and behind the ears? I've been letting all the hair grow for close to 2 years, and it's pretty clear by now what hairs back there are never going to get long enough to reach a ponytail.
I like their soft feel, but they look sloppy. On my right side they grow upward, on the left side they grow downward, creating a lopsided look from behind.
It will be less important when the rest is long enough for a ponytail tied at the base of the neck, instead of a couple inches above the hairline, as it is now. But the downy hairs are so short (2" at the most) it seems they'd grow out again by then anyway.
If you did cut those hairs at some point, did you regret it?
Thanks,
8-)

YO GREG,
Hey, interesting you should ask about this subject. I, for one, DO cut the downey hair at the base of my neck and along side my ears. I find that it adds a bit of a grommed look to my otherwise long hair. Being a professional, with CONSERVATIVE clients, I find that it is improtant that my hair look as neat as it can. But it is a personal choice, do what is best for you.
Also of intrest is the Length of your hair, (i visited your web page), It is alsmost exactly the same length as mine. I started growing out my hair in December of 96, and plan to let it grow and grow....I LUV IT.
Enough for now, Keep us up to date on your progress.

Just be careful that you always stop your cutting efforts shy of where you get full-length hair. Some haircutters, with an aim of making your haircut of the moment look extremely neat, will cut right up to the boundary and maybe even "then some" to make a "nice neat line".
When you do this the next time, the wrongfully hacked hair will only be as long as the neck hair, so your cutter will think it, too, is neck hair, and in "neatening", take off a little more of your long hair. Do this enough times, and your ponytail will be eaten away! I have a friend who lost all his long hair eventually this way, at the hands of a beautician who was cutting his hair "short on top, long in back". His tail eventually got so pitiful he said just to take it off.
The only way to prevent this is to tell them from the get-go to leave the last quarter inch or so alone. I'm not so sure that will look better than what you have now. I'd also be concerned that haircutters are notorious for not doing as instructed. ;-)
I just let my neck down be. It actually looks like puppy fur, nicer than the beard or hair on this 51-year-old dude. But some guys have really scruffy looking neck hair, and if you're one of those, maybe you'll want to hack away at it. Just be careful, and good luck!
hey Greg
I started growing my hair out the Feb'97, and my hair is A LOT longer than yours. Everyone has different hair growth, one thing I found really helpful is that just don't obsess over your hair. Don't over-baby it. Just wash and condition your hair carefully and avoid tight ponytails and oily gunks then you should be alright.
About the downy and side hair, in Jun'97 I went to a barber, and intended to only have my side hair trimmed (BIG MISTAKE) and the barber took so much off that I walked out on him. In Nov'97 I had my side and downy hair trimmed, and they made my downey hair so uneven that I had to trim it myself. SO whatever you do, just stay away from barber,( I went to a salon in Nov) Now I like my side and downy hair even better than the rest of my hair because it is SO long that I can even comfortable wear it down.
JUST STAY AWAY FROM SCISSORS, I'm TELLin YA..
