I have always wanted dreadlocks. I think they look great. But...I'm although my hair is long enough for them...I'm still growing it out (shoulder length now, going for mid back)
Could I get dreadlocks now?
Would my hair continue to grow while they were in?
How long do they last?
How exactly do u go by getting dreadlocks? Just go the barber and say "Hey, I want dreadlocks"?
I've also heard before that you have to get them cut off when you don't want them anymore. Is this true? If so...I can wait for them. I'd like to have dreads like the guy in the Superbowl Levi's commercial.
Yes
Yes
Till you shave your head
Twist your hair with wax I believe. Some specialist salons will do it for you.
Yes it's true.
Yes, I've seen people with hair as short as 5 inches get dreadlocks and they turn out ok.
yes
If they are knotted correctly when put in, they stay in forever until you shave your head.
Either put them in yourself or go to a hair stylist. There are web sites for information on starting dreadlocks.
It is true, you can't get rid of them without cutting your hair. Sometimes a very small amount of hair can be saved, but due to damage it would be better to just shave it off. You want to make sure you really want dreads before you put them in.
I just need to know how do you get your dreds.
How do you get them to stay together and what do you put in your hair?
How do ypu keep them clean?
Yep
Yep, although your the dreads won't hang as low as your current style.
As long as you like. The more mature they get, the more irreversible they become.
It's a time consuming process involving back-combing segments of hair - your standard barber probably wouldn't know the tricks. Go to a specialist.
It's a massive decision (in hair terms) and not one you should half-heartedly make.
Dreads are a cool style, but they are permanent, and they're not always pretty while they're forming (it's not an "instant" style).
To get good information on forming and caring for dreads try this site:
www.dreadheadhq.com
That site has TONS of info and tips, as well an online shop to buy dread wax, combs, and dread beads (among other stuff).
Realize going into it though, that you will have to cut them out, and they can get a bit greasy and rank at times (since you would no longer shampoo/condition the same as with regular hair).
But that being said, dreads do look incredibly cool when done right.
