I know this sounds stupid but..how does one brush one's hair? I just got a Mason Pearson brush and they're a little different than the typical plastic drugstore genre. I dont feel like ripping all my hair out with it yet so I thought Id see if anyone has any advice.
Regards, James
not at all stupid... better ask than do damage to your hair.
first, finger-comb any big tangles out, then start by brushing just the ends and work your way toward the roots with each successive brush stroke. don't try to 'pull' through tangles with the brush- use the brush to 'locate' tangles- use your hands to remove them. brush out your hair before showering to avoid having to detangle wet hair- which many say damages easier.
First, don't use a cluster-type bristle brush. Use the kind that have separated bristles with the protected ends. I use the cushion-type brushes, which feel great as they go through your hair. Next, don't ever brush your hair wet until you've used a wide-toothed comb to get the hair going the same direction. (If you have curly hair, you might want to avoid brushing when wet at all.)
When your hair is dry, do like John says and start at the bottom and work your way up to get the snags out a little at a time. I've heard that between 20 and 100 full strokes a day is good for your hair; I think I rarely have enough leisure time to get above 10. Any more than 50-100 strokes (depending on your hair) is overbrushing.
I find that having a S.O. brush my hair is one of the most relaxing and romantic things, and a great benefit to having long hair.
Thanks
