My uncle Jethro told me, to have long hair is a mortal sin
Are you catholic? I mean, the term takes me to it. If you are, take him to talk to any priest in your city and he'll be quiet. That is not true- If you are anglican, lutheran, episcopalian or anything around that, the same rule applies.
Only some kind of christians use that "teaching" and its totally bogus and false. Jesus had long hair. Samson had it, and the scripture these people use say "shameful" not "sinful"
The issue has more to deal with the separation and distiction between the sexes rather than a blunt-force command that men should wear short hair (and women wearing long hair conversely). As with many things in Scripture, the context will tell you that it's allegorical and not literal. It makes literally ZERO sense to suggest that men can't wear long hair, in and of itself, even though God designed both men and women to grow hair the same way. Again, it's distinction between the sexes and the blurring of the line that's an abomination.
B
1. Nobody knows if Jesus had long hair. Acutally it's more likely that he hadn't. Jesus was drawn as a long hair by the renaisance painters.
2. Most christians quote "1 Corinthians 11:14"
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him.", and they argue that "shame" is the result of a sin.
HOWEVER, only 2 sentences later in 11:16 it says:
"But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God."
Which means that 11:14 is meant in a sarcastic way.
3. The bible is a 2000 year old book. Even "The Star" with a special report on an alien seduction is a better source of information, than the bible. Maybe the bible is a ancient version of a gutter press.
WHO KNOWS? Maybe people will pray to "Bill Clinton and and holy Monica" in 1000 years, just because they found the "Ken Star" report burried somewhere.
aahhhhhhhhhh......ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.... nah
You are attacking the Bible itself and reducing it to a very little part of what it is. I am a person who appreciates it and I don't like people to mock a very important part of the beliefs of nearly half the planet's population. Myself included. I bet some other posters here are belivers too, in a way or another.
I just said that the say (on long hair) of these fundamentalists is a twisted interpretation. Just like the one Rokker makes of his famous FDA report.
1. Well, don't attack my (non) belief then.
2. only because 3 Billion people think they are right, they don't have to be. Do I really have to give examples?
Besides its OT. I talked about the Bible only hair-related. The rest is out of place
Yet one more example of organized religion run amok. Religion is at best, organized obsessive compulsive behavior. Just think about it, if someone did any of the things that organized religion requires, such as making the sign of the cross or counting on the rosary, yet if they were the only person who did these things, they would be considered to have a few screws loose. If a homeless person talks to a garbage can, they are crazy. If a thousand people talked to a bunch of garbage cans all together, it would be a religion. Orgnaized religion is organized neurosis. Fanatical religion is organized psychoses! Oh yeah, and that whole thing about men not having long hair? That's bunk too. Just happened to be the Roman fashion at the time.
That level of thinking is where most Americans could be at if it weren't for religion. I really believe that.
Long hair is just that. Long hair.
Long hair is a choice, just like what clothes to wear, food to eat, etc. Hair is part of a persons body, and the length of a persons hair (whether male or female) is a decision up to that person. Since there is a separation from church and state, we all have a guaranteed right of freedom of expression. Anybody limiting that right is un-American.
Actually, the Bible just says (quoting Paul)that it is "dishonorable"
but the exact same word is used for *other* parts of the human body..
the so-called "dishonorable members"...so should be trim & cut those too!!!
O, and by the way, Paul later states that those *dishonorable parts*
of the body are IMPORTANT...
He's right of course, since we wouldn't be here without them.
seems that is the way it is..............IF THEY DONT LIKE IT..THEY SAY CRAP ABOUT IT........I KNOW A MAN THATS IN HIS 60,S AND HAS VERY COOL PONYTAL.AND HIS BALD..BUZZHEAD FRIENDS SAY CRAP ABOUT IT
great with ponytails ...gray hair and all...
....if women with short hair is a mortal sin too!!!! Is he going to tell all these women that it is a mortal sin to have short hair?
Sounds to me like uncle Jethro has a few rocks in his noggin!
Strange. So very, very strange ....
I live on a little pagan island in the North Atlantic. It's called the United Kingdom. I don't know what mortal sin is. I have never met anyone who has read a Bible, less still can quote from it.
We are talking about hair. What can possibly be sinful about hair ?? I really don't understand this. If we practice tolerance of everyone then Uncle Jethro should be tolerated too but don't take any notice of him.
Perhaps he means it is a mortal sin to operate a lathe, chainsaw or drill with your long hair left loose!
Cheers, Barry
Your post sparked a weird memory ! Back at school (1970s England)in the woodwork room they used to have these posters telling you to tie you hair back accompanied by a photo of a long-haired scalp all mangled up in a drill. I had hair like the lead singer in 'Wigan's Ovation' at the time. Ho Ho Ho. ('Skiiiiing in the Snow' Bah Bah Bah Bah-Bah-Bah)
Jesus had long hair
He probably didn't. The fashion at the time was for short hair.
Fundamentalist Christians refer to Paul's letter to the Corinthians. However, as is usual with religious obsessives, they take a small part of the scripture out of context - in particular, the fashions, laws, beliefs and customs of the times. We live in 2003, not the first century. We live in a different society and a different culture with different values. Frankly, if Jesus Christ could see just what is being preached in his name, he'd be horrified. Modern christians seem to frequently forget the roots of their religion - love and tolerance, I believe. I am not a Christian and never will be. The bible makes interesting reading, has some useful lessons in life, and is of some historical value - but much of it is anecdotal and the new testament is little more than christian propaganda.
Would I cut my hair or choose the clothes I wear on the basis of scriptures written by people who lived in a primitive mysoginistic society about events that occurred years before? I don't think so.
Just a little thought to stir up the waters even more... ;-)
God didn't create religion. Man did - after all, God doesn't need it.
