Anyone notice when you've been out in the sun a lot (in addition to getting tan) your hair looks a little lighter? (not that much lighter, but noticeable) I'm not necessarily complaining about this, just seeing if this is normal.

Yup, perfectly normal, and I love it.
Exposure to Sunlight (ultra violet light) can cause a chemical reaction in certain dyes or pigments that results in colour loss (bleaching). "Faded" curtains in a window are a good example of this effect.
The "lightening" of hair exposed to sunlight is due to the same thing, and is normal.

This isn't a very well informed opinion... but I imagine extreme sun exposure has the potential to dry out and damage hair. Is anyone here in the habit of applying hair oil after being out in the sun?
How about getting into the habit of applying protection BEFORE exposing hair to potentially-damaging elements (sun, salt water, chlorinated pools, treks across the Sahara, etc.).
As one of our resident experts, what do you recommend as being the best protection from the sun etc.?
protection against drying conditions: leave-in the moisturizer of your choice (everyone has his favorite--mine is American Crew); against chlorine damage: Nexxus Aloe-Rid is a specific recommendation.

I generally do a hot oil treatment once a month during spring and summer, as I am outdoors a lot, then. The upper layers of my hair become quite light, and streaks develop, but I was noticing that the lighter hair, especially the streaks, was getting rather dry, brittle, and frizzy.
The only real problem is working the oil through my hair without using gobs of it. Hard to adequately work oil through such thick hair.
