vanderbilt fratboy here, definitely familiar with the look you're talkin about and its huge in the south. hair grows about 1/2 inch a month, and rumored to grow faster if you use products like coconut oil. from my own experience and that of friends, it'll take 6-8 months growing the hair all around, and a year if you're cutting it too keep it looking somewhat decent in the interim. luckily, when in school, just toss on the hat and you're fine. one friend started in april, and had an awesome head of hair by the time he came back the next semester. good luck!
I am a sorority girl and I can honestly tell you that any man who uses more products in his hair than I do is the subject of much ridicule among everyone I know. Using gel, coconut oil, going to the tanning bed, or doing any other kind of frivolous self beautification techniques won't get you laid. It'll get a lot of girls making fun of you behind your back and being nice to you because a) you have a really cute friend or b) they think you'll buy them drinks. Now I love the "frat boy shag" but not if it looks like you tried. Go natural!
