What's the deal with alcohol in haircare products? I have shoulder length wavy/curly hair and I just got out of the awkward phase after growing it for a little over 1,5 years. Usually I use some sort of pomade (sparingly of course because I'm not aiming at lubing engines with my hair) to tame it a little but I decided I'd give mousse a try. Those of you with the same hair type know exactly what it's like to have my kind of hair. Thing is, mousse contains alcohol and that stuff dries your hair out and it's probably damaging in the long run. Any alternatives? Does alcohol free mousse exist? Is alcohol free gel an option? Most of the stuff I've seen in the stores is either "extra strong" or "ultra strong". I don't need a helmet, folks!
Hi: as stated by somebody else further down on the board there are different types of alcohols, some of which are good for your hair. The alcohol in hair products is not the same that you drink or what you might wipe on a wound. Stearyl, cetyl, benzyl alcohol & alcohol denat are the fatty alcohols used in hair products. if concerned, find a product with one of the kinds kinds of alcohol listed (though many do not list the exact type). Or just buy a good brand.

Dep is good, and relatively inexpensive. it doesn't really matter what "strength" you get, as they're all basically the same formula, the weaker ones just have more water in them.
When I am looking for products, I usually ask myself: what are the women I who who care most about their hair using?
from salons: Joico
from drugstores: L'Oreal Paris or Pantene
Pantene's whole marketing theme is healthy hair so either they have products designed for that purpose, or they are a bunch of liars, which I don't believe. Revlon really only makes shampoos and conditioners.
