I am 40 and work for a conservative company in a professional capacity in which suits and ties are required. I currently have fairly short hair, but am growing out the back. I have 'jokingly' told my barber about letting my hair grow into a ponytail. He claims that I have the perfect hair for it, although I am thinning on top. Any thoughts?
Greg,
I, too, work for a conservative company in the computer programming industry. I just turned 44 so we are close in age. When I decided to let my hair grow out, I went directly to my immediate supervisor (who went to the department head.) When the verdict came down, it was agreed that if I would keep the hair NEAT, CLEAN and TIDY, the length was not an issue. Your company may not be as lenient. The only way to find out for certain is to ask! You might mention the three conditions above as they seemed to weigh pretty heavily in my getting permission to let my hair grow.
Good Luck!

Greg,

Though I am a long-hair fan for both males and females of all ages, if I were the employer whose employees worked with customers,"NEAT, CLEAN and TIDY" would be the case with me too.
Of course, when I was a boy in the 40's and 50's, the 99.99% of long-hairs in the First World were female, and I never saw one women whose hair was not done up in some way, except for going to bed, shampooing, performing in theatre or such-like.
Whether Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto on the Lone Ranger series, really had long hair, or just extensions or a switch, we recall it as neatly combed back in a bun in a very handssome, masculine way.

I am also in my early 40's and am letting my hair grow long. I have had shoulder length hair on and off since the 1960's. Every time that it got about that length it looked so bad that I would give up. This time I went to a professional stylist and told her what I wanted to do. Since then (last year) I have returned for trims every two months. The result has been well worth it although it is taking longer for it to reach shoulder length. I have it in a layered style and it now just covers the collar.
This time I have not received one negative comment even though when I'm out with my girlfriend it is very clear that we have the same style (this was not planned, it just so happens that our lengths are about the same right now).
I think that if you go about it this way there will be no questions asked.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. They have been very helpful in my decision. I am looking forward to the new look. I have always wanted long hair, but never followed through as I felt long hair might be perceived as 'inappropriate'. I'm sure it will take a long time for the 'growth' period, but with the help of my barber, should be able to make my plan successful. Appreciate all who replied.
