Renaissance Faires
Believe it or not, I have never really been to one. Are they
as good as some people say they are?
Anybody have ANY EXPERIENCE with them.
How should someone 'prepare' themselves to go? What should you bring?
This would be a first for me.
There is a faire every summer in a town just north of Chicago. I have been a few times. Each faire is just a bit different from the next, some are just "themed" outdoor festivals and some are more "sincere" in their re-enactments of the era.
I suggest that since this is your first time, just go to it as though you were going to the amusement park. The greatest majority of people there will be doing the same. But, you will get the "lay of the land". You get opportunities to meet the more enthusiastic participants, play with armory and the like, try out some of the costumes, etc. Then, if you enjoy what you see, you can go back again with the intent to be a more active participant.
Wear lots of sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and don't be surprised to see people in period costume. I reluctantly went to my first "faire" in Texas a few years ago and had a GREAT time. The main thing is to just go and experience a faire.
Did you wear a costume?
I didn't wear a costume to the faires in Texas, mainly because it was a new experience for me. I think you can enjoy the faire without a costume. The people who were costumed at the Faires seemed to be having a bit more fun and got a lot of attention.
theres an annual one in Tuxedo NY which is one of those that recreate the feel of the time that i go to pretty much every year
(didn't go last year because i was out of town when it was being held)
and it's usually a pretty fun experiance, especially if your into the middle-ages type stuff or like to dress up and be in charictor
only thing though is some of them can be VERY expensive with stuff they sell inside
There is an annual Renaisance Fair at Glen Helen Regional Park just outside San Bernardino, CA every year. People actually plan their weddings there. It's done to the hilt, and very interesting, but believe me nothing is cheap inside, after a pretty steep entry ticket. Lots of great hair, though.
Absolutely. You'll find many long hairs there.
I've been to many of them.
How do you prepare? Get a lot of rest. You'll be doing alot
of walking.
I don't know if your area has it but check out the mud show and
the jousting. Also if you want period clothes, knives,
or other stuff the vendors have many choices.
I found it very easy to go in and spend lots of money.
A warning though: our version of the Renaissance Faire
has porta potties. Some people don't particularly care
for them.......
At least it's not like Medieval Manor where you have
to ask the kings permission to use the bathroom.
(Medieval Manor is a local restaurant set in the same period.)
